Tardy though they are, we welcome MSNBC to finally joining every major conservative news outlet -- including Fox News, The American Spectator, Human Events, National Review and Sweetness & Light -- in discrediting the idea that President Obama wasn't born in this country and, therefore, is ineligible to be president.

Now the big question: Was Joe Biden born on this planet?

Inasmuch as the "birther" movement was hatched in the station wagon of MSNBC's favorite left-wing fantasist, Larry Johnson, maybe the mainstream media can stop acting as if it's a creation of the Republican National Committee.

Which party contains 99 percent of the people who believe (or believed):

-- O.J. is innocent;

-- Bush shirked his National Guard duty;

-- Sarah Palin's infant child, Trig, was actually the child of her daughter;

-- Justice Antonin Scalia threw the 2000 election to Bush so that his son could get a legal job with the Labor Department;

-- The spectacularly guilty Mumia Abu-Jamal was framed;

-- The Diebold Corp. secretly stole thousands of Kerry votes in 2004;

-- Duke lacrosse players gang-raped a stripper;

-- Bill Clinton did not have sex with "that woman";

-- Heterosexuals are just as likely to contract AIDS as gays;

-- John Edwards didn't have an affair with Rielle Hunter;

-- John Edwards' campaign aide Andrew Young is the father of Rielle Hunter's child.

And as has been recently noted, a 2007 Rasmussen poll showed that 35 percent of Democrats believe Bush knew about the 9/11 attacks in advance, while 26 percent aren't sure ...

Holy mackerel.

Another favorite MSNBC guest, Janeane Garofalo, believes Enron's Ken Lay faked his own death. It's weird that Keith Olbermann didn't ask her about that when she was on his show a couple of months ago, given his sudden interest in stamping out conspiracy theories.

Also trying to revive his failing TV show, MSNBC'S Chris Matthews has been denouncing the birthers on "Hardball" nightly and demanding that every elected Republican who appears on his show do the same.

How many times has Matthews forced Democratic officeholders to denounce Al Sharpton for the Tawana Brawley hoax? Or for that matter, how many times has he forced Sharpton -- a frequent guest on his show -- to admit the case was a fraud?

Sharpton has veto power over all Democratic presidential candidates. Even Al Gore, a former vice president of the United States, was required to kiss Sharpton's ring.

If there ever comes a time when Republican presidential candidates have to get the blessing of the head of the birther movement to run, I'll say: I'm wrong -- Republicans do have as many conspiracy nuts as the Democrats.

Not content with merely humoring their nuts, Democratic officeholders promote conspiracy theories themselves.

Ann, as a lawyer who worked at the USSC, please tell me how a man who admits to being governed by British Nationality at birth can be eligible under Article 2 Section 1 of our Constitution?

No person except a natural born citizen, or a citizen of the United States, at the time of the adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the office of President; neither shall any person be eligible to that office who shall not have attained to the age of thirty five years, and been fourteen Years a resident within the United States.

Good article, although obviously I don’t agree with her comparison of “birthers” with DNC cranks.

Without taking any particular exception to anything you say below, I must say that Ann's piece doesn't strike me as an actual attack on "birthers," so much an it is the lack of a defense of them/us. All her piece says is that "If you think the Republican Party has gone round the bend with people thinking they can remove a sitting president over the absence of evidence of native citizenship (which no prior POTUS has been required to produce), I can name a dozen crackpot ideas off the top of my head which are held by more Democrats in America than there are 'birthers' in the entire country. And while you can't show me a 'birther' high up in the Republican Party, there are essentially no Democrats in the country who don't hold at least one idea which is at least as crackpot as anyone thinks the 'birthers' are."

I don’t think its being a crank to ask to see his original birth certificate, and to ask what citizenship he claimed in college.

It wounds me that Ann doesn’t see it my way, but I’ll get over it.

Ann, its simple. I make no claims. I cast no aspersions. I only ask:

1. Release the original birth certificate, and
2. Answer what citizenship O claimed in college.

It annoys me, it doesn’t surprise me but it annoys me that the press can not spare anyone to flesh out O’s biography. If I go up against him publicly I promise you you’ll know every sordid detail in marron’s history by week’s end. It will all be out there, including those years I spent as a caribbean pirate. They’ll hack my witness protection program files, all of the restraining orders will be right out there on page one.

But half a year into O’s presidency we’ve never seen an interview with anyone who knew his mom, his grandpa, or O himself really. The complete and total lack of curiousity on the part of the press is, well, remarkable.

My point about the constitutional requirement for native citizenship of the POTUS is that it is a slender reed of a requirement because there are so many unpatriotic native American citizens and so many patriotic naturalized American citizens. And that, considering that Obama was born and raised by people of no patriotism and schooled in a foreign culture in foreign lands, if Obama is a native American citizen that is the technicality much more so than the fact (if fact it be) that Obama's mother was not in Hawaii on the day he was born.

When you get down to it, the nativity requirement in the Constitution would make as much sense (albeit less provable) if it required that a POTUS be conceived in the US. Which would eliminate the anchor babies.

Sorry Gary, you know I love Ann but on this topic I’ve got to disagree with her; though I love how she takes on the left in this column.

I’m having difficulty with her position on so called birthers. Most of us simply want Obama to prove his eligibility under Article 2, Section 1 of the US Constitution that he is eligible to hold the office of POTUS after he admits to holding British Nationality at birth.

Throw in his adoption to an Indonesian Citizen and at best he is a Naturalized Citizen - but we don’t know this.

I’d also expect Ann to slam Obama for his secrecy and the reported millions he’s spent to keep any and all documents from his past (including state Senate records??) sealed.

I would love to know why Ann, being a lawyer who worked at the USSC feels confident Obama is eligible when nobody has seen documentation that would prove it.

I do not believe Ann will answer your question. She has been warned and most who might possibly question Obama’s constitutional qualifications. Have they been threatened? I would say most definitely!

Only us American Patriots will continue to fight for the truth and even go so far as to turn our own names into the White House on line watch web site to save the Obama supporters the trouble of turning us in!

I think her point is that no matter how far this goes, it will not stop the corrupt Justice Department and the corrupt Obama administration all with the help of the Dixie Mafia and the Chicago/PoliticalMachine/DaleyMob/Criminal Rham Emanuel "the enforcer" organization from keeping Obama in office no matter what is proved on this issue.
