WASHINGTON - The National Rifle Association's threat to punish senators who vote for Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor has been met with a shrug by Democrats from conservative-leaning states and some Republicans who are breaking with their party to support her.

The powerful gun owners rights lobbying group is used to getting its way by spooking lawmakers about the political consequences of defying its wishes. But it never before has weighed in on a Supreme Court confirmation battle and was nervous from the start about engaging in what looked like a losing a fight to defeat President Barack Obama's first pick for the top U.S. court, whose members serve for life.

Much the same way that I will meet their requests for money and votes.

The NRA can’t win ‘em all - they took their best shot. ( NO PUN intended)

Not a single Senator who votes to confirm Sotmayor will be re-elected. You can take that to the bank.

Do they not send out voter information cards letting their members know who votes for this and that?

This confirmation is inevitable. It is the replacement of one liberal by another. Although I would like to see a different outcome, it is impossible. This is NOT a good place for anyone to waste political capital. Save it for a more important time.

Sotomayor is a done deal folks. I don’t like it but them’s the facts. It’s good that she’s replacing a liberal like Souter anyway, which is why the RINOs are going to support her. They wanted to give Barry his first pick but I pray to God that they’ll fight tooth and nail if Scalia or Thomas retires or passes away.

Not a single Senator who votes to confirm Sotmayor kills a young girl while drunk will be re-elected. You can take that to the bank.

You overestimate the voters intelligence. 70% of the people can't name a single member of SCOTUS.

I would not even take it to a piggy bank. This will be a non issue by the time the next election rolls around.

Sadly, I think you are wrong. During last year’s primaries and general election, a number of eastern politicians stood up to the NRA and won (Pennsylvania comes to mind). I think many others, Dems and Repubs have been emboldened by those results.

Agreed. Moreover, they need to really ramp up the next seasons election lineup to target the bozos who voted to confirm. The vermin in congress need to be reminded at times not to monkey with the buzzsaw when it's busy cutting wood....

Typical leftist disinformation courtesy of AP. This whole article is by and large unsubstantiated hearsay and wishful thinking on the part of the lapdog media.

This confirmation is inevitable.

Seems the timing was perfect: Souter left while Bambo's numbers were still high. So now we'll have LaRazamayor on the nation's highest court.

The NRA has four million members.

The antigun AARP has forty million members.

If we lose this, it won’t be the NRA’s fault. It will be the 76 million gunowners too cheap and cowardly to join the NRA.
