CHICAGO (Reuters Life!) - Armed with pruning shears and a paper bag, Nance Klehm walks along a Chicago sidewalk, pointing out plants and weeds that can make a tasty salad or stir-fry.
She snips stalks from a weed with downy leaves and white powder commonly called goosefoot or lamb's quarters.
"I collect a lot of this," said Klehm, 43. "It's indistinguishable from spinach when you cook it. I never, never grow spinach or other greens except kale. Everything else I forage."
Klehm is among a small group of urban foragers across the United States who collect weeds and plants from city streets and gardens to use in meals and medicines. Some are survivalists while others are environmentalists or even gourmands seeking new flavors for cooking.

This was quite common during the ‘30’s. I recall seeing people in the Forest Preserves around Chicago foraging for all sorts of plants to make do since cash for food was scarce.
THanks for the link! I have been searching to no avail.
Sending this to friends that insist that parts of MI are going back to the forrest... and they are.
thx again
“Redneck in the city, eats raccoons and squirrels shot on a vacant lot. Theres a hint he goes after hawks and eagles too.

LMAO you are very welcome.
Did you see the thread where Michelle’s garden is filled w/sewer sludge? It’s on drudge, also.
If you think country gardens don’t have critters dumping poo in them, you’re silly. Dog waste would be dressing compared to what the wild critters are leaving behind...
I’d have to be pretty desperate to troll urban sidewalks for food.
EEEWWWW!!!!!!!
I wonder if that is covered under this new food legislation?
I used to work adjacent to Skid Row, and urination was a common sight...but when I saw an anal download in progress - mid day - I knew the 'hood was kicking it up a notch.
About 20 minutes after posting this thread, the ‘puter went dead, ceiling fan stopped, wife came in and informed me everything was off. Beautiful sunny day and very little wind. Thinking the worst, I grabbed the keys to the truck. Maybe I'm just a little paranoid but I'm thinking EMP. Truck started, no problem. Grabbed the pre-charged Black and Decker Storm Station and tuned into local stations - nothing but old time rock and roll. Wife called power company on her cell - 562 costumers without power - called a buddy in EMS, he doesn't know anything in the area.
Fired up the grill. Saw a dude coming down the gravel drive talking on a cell phone long before he saw my house. Dude stopped just at the paved part of my drive where my no trespassers will be shot sign. He looked up and saw me and the wife on the porch. Dude approached with cell phone in ear, hands out and stopped about 30 feet from my porch. I didn't say a word. He pulled the cell phone from his ear and asked if he could speak to me. Just my opinion but I think the sign and my Glock on my hip made him hesitate.
He asked if my power was out. I said it was. He asked if I knew how long it would be out. I said it didn't matter to me if it was out for ever. Dude turned and left quicker than split.
Power was out about 2 hours.
Zombie alert!!!
Wait until shtf - Ain't seen nothing yet.
dude, that is sick...lolooloLOLOlo
anal download bump...LOLOLOLOLo
“Having been a city denizen, Id pass on those greens in the sidewalks...”
Yah, big time...I grew up in North Philly...you DEFINITELY want to avoid some of the “Urban Herbs” out there along the sidewalks.
ErnBatavia: “Anal Download in progress”???? Now THERE is some descriptive imagery... LMAO over here...
What can grow in those upside down planters OTHER than tomatoes?

Only problem I’ve heard about is when the plants begin to grow they try to grow up instead of down. You have to train them to go down.
A good little garden story .............
