Ohio Senator George Voinovich says that the GOP is "being taken over by southerners," the Columbus Dispatch reports.
In an interview with with the paper, Voinovich said shrinking demographics and southern senators are alienating his conservative constituents. He cites Republican Senators Jim DeMint and Tom Coburn as the GOP's biggest problem.
"We got too many Jim DeMints (R-S.C.) and Tom Coburns (R-Ok.). It's the southerners. They get on TV and go 'errrr, errrrr.' People hear them and say, 'These people, they're southerners. The party's being taken over by southerners. What they hell they got to do with Ohio?'," Voinovich said.
Salon notes that Voinovich is not the sole Republican speaking out against the regional isolation. Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty acknowledged last year that the Republicans were facing increasingly difficult competition in large parts of the country, including Voinovich's Ohio.
"We cannot be a majority governing party when we essentially cannot compete in the Northeast, we are losing our ability to compete in Great Lakes states, we cannot compete on the West Coast, we are increasingly in danger of competing in the mid-Atlantic states, and the Democrats are now winning some of the Western states," Pawlenty said.
Not stopping at the GOP's biggest problem, Voinovich says President Obama's biggest problem is "two words: Nancy Pelosi."
Good, you get it...
***They get on TV and go ‘errrr, errrrr.’ People hear them and say, ‘These people, they’re southerners.***
And a former senator gets on TV and goes ‘ummm, ummm’ and us southerners say, ‘he’s a lyin’ Chicago thug.’
I don't know if there is any difference between Wichita cuisine and Russell cuisine.
“Whether Oklahoma counts as Southern or Midwestern seems to depend on whom you ask—the original settlers (not counting the Indians, many of which had been involuntarily relocated there from elsewhere) were from all the surrounding states as well as from further afield. Lots of Kansans.”
Correct and Vice-Versa. Northern Oklahoma has a shared cultural and Economic bond with Kansas, especially Wichita.
I live in Wichita and a good number of people here have roots or branches in Southern Oklahoma. More so than they typically do with Missouri or Nebraska. Colorado, for all purposes is basically considered ‘another country’ in these parts.
Tulsa and Wichita also have many connections, a friendly rivalry and common bonds.
Oklahoma is as much Midwestern as it is Southern. To compare it to South Carolina is disingenuous.
Not hardly.....we’ve always been for less government and for them to stay out of our business......
Wasn’t he a Democrat convert anyway?
Bob Dole was also from Russell.
Comparing Russell to Wichita is like comparing Mayberry to Cincinnati.
‘Wichita Cuisine’, well... We have a few local favorites, places you definitely can’t find anywhere else, but we are mainly a good cross-section of Americana as far as ‘cuisine’ is concerned. Somewhat Generic with a few PLEASANT surprises.
I hope George Voinovich will re-member...
...Southern man don’t need him around, anyhow!
I meant Northern Oklahoma, sorry.
Oh now come on. Hurricanes come to KS too. However we....oh wait a minute. I might just agree that it is terrible here too. High humidity, really stupid people, (after all we elected Sebelius) tornados, stinky people. Democrats stay home!
Indefense of stinky people, our stockmen/women and those in agriculture get a pass. Love 'em.
You said — I knew there was something fishy about that Sarah Palin. Shes a southerner!

Ummm..., we’ll take her down here... :-)

I always heard that the South will rise again...
The South, as in South Dakota, which is a red state. Seriously, the South tried to leave the Union, and places like Ohio wouldn’t let us leave. Don’t complain to us.
Democrats are a problem everywhere...
What happened to Walberg is a great example of what is wrong with the GOP. He defeated a RINO to get the seat. Then when the next election rolled around the NRCC declared him a lost cause and stripped him of money. He lost by a whopping 2% (some lost cause huh?)
In any case he’s announced that he’ll run again in Michigan’s 7th district and if the GOP has a single working brain cell they’ll give him their full support.
Walberg was a vocal no vote on TARP. He spent last summer in a darkened house of representatives demanding that the democrats return to deal with gas prices. He’s pro life, pro drilling, pro 2nd amendment, for lower taxes and just about every other conservative stance you can think of. In 17 years as a state legislator he never once voted to raise taxes and was a proud founding member of our “No caucus”.

Our new congressman, socialist democrat Mark Shauer’s first act as congressman was to pay the largest fine for campaign finance violations ever paid in the state of Michigan.
Incidentally, the RINO walberg defeated to gain the seat (Joe Schwarz) endorsed the democrat against Walberg in the last election.
Truth be told, many conservatives have fled the Rust Belt, the Northeast and California to move to the South where they have more conservatives and lower taxes. So, it is only natural that more GOP senators would wind up being from Southern states. When you mix high taxes, socialist liberals and government nannyism, many conservatives will flee to a place where the government isn’t as oppressive. That doesn’t mean the South is Nirvana. But compared to Massachussetts or San Francisco or Cleveland or Chicago, it sure seems like it.

Well, I would say Southerner... but then..., I’m from Texas, too... :-)
But, I would say that most Okies would say Southerner...
Now Tulsa is the buckle of the Bible Belt, ya know...
The Senator is an AH..
I live on the west coast, CA, and I totally support my southern brothers.
