Well, it's time again for my quarterly "What Are You Reading Now?" thread.
I do this thread to gauge what other Freepers are reading. As all of you know, Freepers are probably some of the more well-read individuals on the Internet and I'm always curious as to what we're reading.
It can be anything, a classic work of fiction, a NY Times bestseller, a technical journal, a trashy pulp novel...in short anything.
Please do not ruin this thread by replying "I'm reading this thread". It become un-funny a long time ago.
I'll start. I'm about halfway thru "The Horrid Pit: The Battle Of The Crater" by Alan Axelrod. It's a great book that concentrates on one of the more controversial and bloody battles of the Civil War.
Well, what are YOU reading now?
I did start Winter’s Tale once, I confess. It was different from the other two novels, so I didn’t stay at it. I will, however, and I appreciate the reminder.
Memoirs from the Antproof Case is magnificent...though perhaps in the end one of the saddest things I have ever read.
Modernism: The Lure of Heresy by Peter Gay
Cambridge Ancient History volume 7 part 1 (Hellenstic Kingdoms)
Orthodoxy by GK Chesterton
I’m in the middle of reading (in order — if I can get them) everything by W.E.B. Griffin, David Baldacci, and Patricia Cornwell...
Soft Despotism, Democracy’s Drift by Paul Anthony Rahe.
The Politically Incorrect Guide to the Great Depression and the New Deal by Robert P. Murphy.
Thanks! I’ll check the library catalog immediately.
Done, #55 on the waitlist. Oh, well ;-).
I check that out for my daughter, and she didn’t care for it. That doesn’t mean it’s bad, of course ... maybe it just didn’t take off right away.
I’m just finishing Angels of Destruction by Keith Donohue.
I really like it. It even briefly mentions the weather underground!
Well written and engaging. i’ll read more of his books.
I had read about the story but had not seen that. thanks.
Just finished a re-read of The Hunchback of Notre Dame.”
The Discovery Of Freedom
Man’s Struggle Against Authority
by Rose Wilder Lane
daughter of Laura Ingalls Wilder
“The Brass Verdict” by Michael Connelly.
We’ll see. I’ve slogged through a helluva lot worse ;)
I’ll pick up “Memoirs from the Antproof Case” next. Thanks for the tip!
Re Gladwell’s Outliers, I really liked the first part of the book. In fact it was so good I gave it to four graduates this June. He writes very well. No surprise, he works for the New Yorker. And I had found his earlier book, The Tipping Point, to be a good read.
I learned my lesson. I had only read the first half of Outliers. He must have run out of good examples because he talks about the family rivalries among white settlers in Appalachia. From that and one small study he concludes that southern men are aggressive and rude. He writes well and his notions about the 10,000 hour rule and timing are worthwhile but he’s clearly a flaming liberal.
Highly recommend reading the first half of his book but get it from the library.
Just recently finished reading Sonny Barger’s “Hell’s Angel” and his most recent” Riding High,Living Free”.
“Foreign Enemies and Traitors” - Matthew Bracken
“Indide Europe: 1940 War Edition” - John Gunther
“Tragedy and Hope” - Carroll Quigley
Senatorial Privilege by Leo Damore
A Deadly Game by Catherine Crier
Jewish Antiquities by Flavius Josephus
“The New World Order” by Pat Robertson.
