WASHINGTON Knocked offstride by a racial uproar he helped stoke, President Barack Obama hastened Friday to try and tamp down the controversy. Obama, who had said Cambridge, Mass., police "acted stupidly" in arresting black scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr., declared the white arresting officer was a good man and invited him and the professor to the White House for a beer.
Obama conceded his words had been ill-chosen, but he stopped short of a public apology. He personally telephoned both Gates and Sgt. James Crowley, hoping to end the rancorous back-and-forth over what had transpired and what Obama had said about it. Trying to lighten the situation, he even commiserated with Crowley about reporters on his lawn.
Hours earlier, a multiracial group of police officers had stood with Crowley in Massachusetts and said the president should apologize.
It was a measure of the nation's keen sensitivities on matters of race that the fallout from a disorderly conduct charge in Massachusetts and the remarks of America's first black president about it had mushroomed to such an extent that he felt compelled to make a special appearance at the White House to try to put the matter to rest. The blowup had dominated national attention just as Obama was trying to marshal public pressure to get Congress to push through health care overhaul legislation and as polls showed growing doubts about his performance.

Obama definitely did the right thing by edging away from the racial precipice he danced near.
He’ll eat some crow over this still- but if he wouldn’t have and stirred up trouble he’d be in worse shape and so might the country.
It appears President Obama is learning the meaning of “Chickens coming home to roost.”
The hell he wants to quell the racial fire, obama only wants to take the spotlight off his part in it.
Maybe the white cops should just stay out of black neighborhoods from now on.
They can police their own.
Black on black crime?
Too bad.
Don’t bother calling the white cops.
They won’t be coming.
What a douche. We should all be embarrassed (at least the idiots who voted for him should be embarrassed). To think he is the best we could do for President.
No kidding, Obama insulted the police officer in public so he should apologize in public. Obama is a coward.
The bullet already left the barrel. Can't put it back.
He exposed himself for what he is...No going back.
That reminds me of a statement made by a normally-conservative black co-worker who rationalized his vote for Obama this way: "Gotta help a brother out."
Yes, that's what he said. Groan.
Exactly. He got where he is today by manipulating the racial issue, but he had to be careful how he did it so that his true - dare I say it? - colors wouldn’t come out. But every so often, they do, and he knows that most of America doesn’t like what it sees.
That’s the only reason he even pretended to apologize (which he didn’t really do, of course). With Barry, it’s all about him.
It’s funny to think about how the braindead left criticized Bush for being an illiterate, a moron, a chimp and a hillbilly. But compared to Obama, Bush looks like Einstein. Obama might be the dumbest mother f***** to ever step foot in Washington and I really mean that. I think the guy has mush in his skull and he can’t think for himself. Someone is pulling his puppet strings and when he’s left to his own devices, he can’t pour piss out of a boot with the instructions on the heel.
Obama rushes to quell racial uproar he helped fire
Before becoming Resident his only job was to cause racial strife. Why should he change now?
What we know for sure about 0bama is he is prejudiced against white cops and firefighters.
What we can assume is this extends to other whites serving in uniform — our military, perhaps even postmen.

Actually, this incident could have turned out much for Gates. Officer got a call for a crime in progress, attempted break-in. Officer arrives and Gates is in house matching description. Gates refuses to provide ID intitally. At that point he could have been taken down and cuffed. Officer is due credit for his experience assuming Gates may have been resident. He gave him a pass at least initially. Gates continued to push his agenda. possibly to provoke the Officer into a bad situation. Experienced Officer resisted his taunts. It escalated outside the home, with witnesses present. Gates kept pushing his agenda. Officer arrested and Hussein 0bama saw this as a chance to push his racists agenda through his racists Friend. Hussein proclaimed to the world the Officer “acted stupidly” before getting all the facts. To Hussein, he thought he could drop the drop the charge and reap the benefits. However, facts came to light - not only the Officers report, but supporting Officers report and witness statements show Gates was pushing his agenda and got busted for it. Hussein decided to back his black brothers charge before a national audience before knowing all the facts.
0bama is a race baiting fool and tried to ruin the Officers reputation and career just to push his racial platform that puts minorities above the law. Now he makes a half baked attempt to put this behind him after the shtf. We're not buying your non-appology Hussein. You spoke from your heart which is filled with hate which you so very effectively hid while running for office. You have been exposed. May God give us direction on how to deal with our present situation.
The world is falling off a cliff and he is on the telephone trying to smooth this over.
That wins the "pithy opening comment of 2009" award.
Excellent!
Holy crap! An AP headline that makes Ogabe look bad. What will they think of next...
Compare and contrast the situations between the treatment of a liberal and the treatment of a conservative:
Double standard? Do you see it differently?
