BITTER PILL FOR NATION'S GOVS

'I'm personally very concerned about the cost issue," said New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, referring to Congress' health-care plans. It's "the mother of all unfunded mandates," fumed Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen.

That's just the Democratic governors.

Indeed, nearly everone from both parties at last weekend's National Governors Association conference was sounding alarms, fretting that the states will be stuck with much of the bill for "reform."

Welcome aboard, governors.

With each passing day, it seems, another voice is heard from. Last week, the Congressional Budget Office warned that reforms would fuel government costs.

The governors, in particular, fear that their states will be forced to pay for an expansion of Medicaid meant to help achieve universal health-care coverage -- even as they sweat out their existing budget woes. Indeed, their cash pinch will only grow tighter as federal stimulus money dries up over the next few years.

Which is one reason why six leading senators -- four of them Democrats -- yesterday called on President Obama to drop his hell-bent-for-leather timetable and take a 70-day timeout, to forge a bipartisan consensus.

And why a new ABC News-Washington Post poll shows public approval of Obama's handling of health care has plummeted -- from 57-29 percent positive in April to 49-44 percent.

Alas, the president yesterday remained oblivious to these concerns, reiterating the "urgent" need to "act and act now."

Big mistake.

As GOP national chairman Michael Steele yesterday noted, "If we screw this up, it could last a generation."

What's the hurry?

What part of the Constitution exactly is it that grants the authority to the Federal Government to mandate health insurance be purchased by individuals, and grants the authority to punish through fines if they do not?

Certainly not the Interstate Commerce clause.

It isn't the Constitution that we need to look to for answers:

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed,

That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government

I suspect that what they’re really concerned about is the fact that when the Federal government spends their money, they can’t use it to buy the votes they need to stay in office. I doubt it has to do with fiscal responsibility in any way.

The more the federal government consumes the less left to the states. Many of the states are already bankrupt. So things are only going to get worse, much worse.

Then there is the question of administration. The plan will be administered on a state by state basis. That means that you must go to a doctor or facility in your state for treatment.

The poor socialists in Southwest Virginia who depend on East Tennessee for doctors and specialists and hospitals will be out of luck. They will be forced to drive 150 miles to Roanoke for first class hospitalization.

Congressman Rick Boucher is quiet on the issue

My business is already failing! I've laid off over half my work force, I've been carrying the rest of the work force, despite the fact that the work is not there. I just went through my books yesterday and we are officially broke. To add insult to injury we received anotice of intent to audit (is that because I've been on local television protesting the administration, I do not know.

We are looking at ways to re-structure and try to ride this out; but if the dems continue to destroy the economy, it will be a losing battle.

Barry knows that sunlight is the best disinfectant. This can of condensed crap he's hawking as health care “reform” reeks to high heaven and the longer it is exposed the more that is known. I refuse to believe that the average person is that ignorant not to realize this after he said the exact same things before the “stimulus” (which looks like it needs some viagra at this point), and crap and tax. This notion that we are in crisis mode and every thing has to be done immediately is nothing more than a smoke screen to ram every progressive wet dream through a compliant Congress.

That is very true... but his polling is allowing some dims who do not hate America to stand up to him and say no... and I believe that he will not get his communist health-care plan approved and a second stimulus is DOA. We are witnessing the beginning of the fastest fall from power this Nation has ever seen.

This is why the 17th Amendment is B.S. The Constitution was written so that the senate was populated by members selected by and responsible to the popularly elected state legislatures. The idea being that this would induce the senators to act in the best interests of their state, not, as is now the case, in their own political interest. This, on the surface anyway, would have eliminated alot of the problems with unfunded mandates by the federal governemnt.

We need to quit jackin' around with the living, breating document chit and take the Constitiution for what is says.

Belive it or not the Constitution ISN'T mentioned ONCE in any of the 1017 pages of HR 3200. And neither is the Interstate Commerce clause.
