An eventual attack on Iran may include ground forces. Units of Sayeret Matka"1 ("Headquarters Scouts", Israel's elite special forces) have been transferred to the mock in Biq'at Hayareach ("Moon Vale"), not far from Eilat.
They have spent the last few weeks training there: parachuting, paragliding, urban warfare, and hand to hand combat.
Special emphasis is placed on explosives. The area is isolated (it got its name from its eerie similarity to the moonscape), but various civilian suppliers have reported massive explosions during the day.

I don’t think these commandos have any illusions about their fate at the hands of the Iranians. They will not allow themselves to be taken prisoner, if they can help it.
I always thought that a ground commando raid would have to complement an air campaign if only because the IDF thinks “outside the box”. There are also advantages to have ground troops “lasing the target” for precision airstrikes.
And hey, if the Israelis DON’T do it, they have given the Iranians something to think about. They are already paranoid about anti-regime forces operating in the hinterlands. Imagine what Tehran is thinking right now?
I worked at the Pentagon and then the command center in Seoul Korea.
During war games the 1st thing always taken out was communications then command.
Pretty unsettling when a nuclear war game starts at 8:00 A.M. and at 8:01A.M. you get a message to shut down operations as you got destroyed by a (whatever ton) nuclear device detonated 3 meters from the opening of my bunker or office.
I think many of you underestimate Israel. There have been Israeli assets on the ground during both Gulf Wars. Not sure if they made it back, but I never heard any reports that they didn’t, which undoubtedly would be reported in the Arab press. Anyway, there comes a time in ANY nation’s history that the ultimate sacrifice is worth giving.

Too true,
Ya think the Mullahs are sleeping well now a days?
Israeli soldiers have been able to blend in with enemy populations very well.
Non-lethal weaponry at its finest.
If Iran DOES nuke someone, we should carpet-bomb Mecca with pigs during the Hajj.
Cheers!
To far to go for a small raider team, and Israel doesn't have the forces for a major insertion.
So something other than the bunkers is a target, or they are out there as a distraction.
Great point.
Israel must and will defend itself against the Iranian Nazis. Be prepared for an oil shock that will plummet our economy. Gas lines. Brown-outs. Food shortages. This will, of course, embolden the Dem Nazi sympathizers to declare war on Judaism. It will be a rough several years. All because we did not have the guts to stop Iran ourselves. Obama may use the situation to declare martial law. All bets are off.
I suppose these guys put laser beacons on Iran’s best targets
You seem to be unfamiliar with the siting of Iran’s nuclear assets. The only nuclear power plant, Bushier, is located not far from a coast. Once Bushier is destroyed, which can be accomplished by air, there is no reason to continue a full fuel cycle unless you want to build nuclear weapons. It’s irrefutable that Iran is seeking nuclear weapons capability.
I suspect the commandos are readying for a mission we can’t fathom at this point. It is not to eliminate Iran’s nuclear power plant. As previously mentioned removing the human assets would be a huge set back for Iran.
I have posed this scenario to active USAF and USN pilots, they have told me they would turn in their wings if ordered to shoot down IAF aircraft
Definitely. Except perhaps in the case of victory in Japan, 1945.
This is not without precedent. The raid on the Osirak reactor was thought to be a one way mission. The pilots knew they may not make it back, considering their fuel load, low altitude flying, and distance. Knowing the risk, they did it anyway. They were successful in destroying the reactor and returning safely. Never doubt their resolve and ability to achieve the seemingly impossible....especially when their existence is at stake.
It was good all eight F-16 pilots returned home safe.
But such will not be the case for the Sayaret Matkal commandos.
Some will make it there in time, some will not.
That location will be FAR from any Iranian ground troops...far enough that C-130s (with F15 cover)can land and take off before bad guys can get there.
Now, as long as they don't have a crash in the desert, they'll be OK.
