It's Not An Option (IBD Exclusive Series: Government-Run Healthcare: A Prescription For Failure)
IBD Editorials ^ | July 15, 2009 | INVESTORS BUSINESS DAILY Staff

Congress: It didn't take long to run into an "uh-oh" moment when reading the House's "health care for all Americans" bill. Right there on Page 16 is a provision making individual private medical insurance illegal.

When we first saw the paragraph Tuesday, just after the 1,018-page document was released, we thought we surely must be misreading it. So we sought help from the House Ways and Means Committee.

It turns out we were right: The provision would indeed outlaw individual private coverage. Under the Orwellian header of "Protecting The Choice To Keep Current Coverage," the "Limitation On New Enrollment" section of the bill clearly states:

"Except as provided in this paragraph, the individual health insurance issuer offering such coverage does not enroll any individual in such coverage if the first effective date of coverage is on or after the first day" of the year the legislation becomes law.

So we can all keep our coverage, just as promised — with, of course, exceptions: Those who currently have private individual coverage won't be able to change it. Nor will those who leave a company to work for themselves be free to buy individual plans from private carriers.

From the beginning, opponents of the public option plan have warned that if the government gets into the business of offering subsidized health insurance coverage, the private insurance market will wither. Drawn by a public option that will be 30% to 40% cheaper than their current premiums because taxpayers will be funding it, employers will gladly scrap their private plans and go with Washington's coverage.

God help us...

That is no exaggeration. Obama is going to kill this country in less than a year with his policies including that farce Cap & Trade.

China is the biggest polluter in the world and isn't going to do a damned thing about it. This is political payback to the enviroMENTALISTS. We are screwed if both of these pass!

Arkansas has two senators sitting on the fence. Blanche Lincoln thinks her twelve year old twin sons know more about 'climate change' than Arkansans. BTW, they don't live in Arkansas! They live in VIRGINIA!

If Cap & Trade passes Arkansas will lose THOUSANDS of jobs! None of us will have health insurance because we will be UNEMPLOYED! We won't have health care either because NO ONE is going to spend 8+ years in school to be forced to work for the GOVERNMENT for NOTHING!

Does anyone know this answer? I currently have Tri-care Prime (Military govt. program) for which I pay a premium and co-pays that are affordable. I am pretty satisfied with it over the years it has been good, even with some glitches. In two months I am required to go on medicare and then Tri-care becomes my secondary insurance. At least that is the way it has been before. With this new program, will I be forced to give up Tri-Care?

I appreciate your attempts to comfort...however, I don’t think we’re simply “in a cycle.” I fear we are reaching the end of this grand experiment.

Probably not, but the level of service may suffer. But that's true, new law or not....

Sean Hannity (radio) is sounding the alarm on this now, also.

I think that’s been a risk since day 1. And, I never said we don’t have to work at it.

It won’t matter by 2010. The Rats plan on pushing socialized healthcare and cap and tax through by the end of this year. Once they are passed, they are never going away. The Rats will run every year on how they are going to “fix” them.

I think all Heck is going to break loose when the insurance companies get wind of this. They will be spending furiously on TV ads. I’m popping corn.

It's over 1,000 page bill. There should be a .pdf file somewhere on online, and do a "Tri-Care" search on it.

A $285,000 earner income tax bill is only $79,191?

So we can all keep our coverage, just as promised — with, of course, exceptions: Those who currently have private individual coverage won't be able to change it. Nor will those who leave a company to work for themselves be free to buy individual plans from private carriers.

Nor will new employees of companies be entitled to enroll in the premium private insurance that existing employees will have.

Once you lose your current insurance (which happens every time you change jobs, or your employer decides to reduce costs), then you are required to be covered ONLY under the Government plan.

If this passes, then this is the end of America.

It's not science fiction anymore.

That is the way I read it.

Also, it seems to indicate that employers will not be able to either stop or change the medical insurance they offer when this becomes law?

I would think if that is the case, some employers might be best informed, by their financial guys, to drop all insurance coverage now, if it looks like this monstrosity will become law. If they wait, they would be required to continue to offering their current health insurance forever?

The devil is in the details, that is for sure.

OMG. I have TriCare Prime now. I have to go on Medicare Sept. 1. I am scheduled for surgery the first week of Sept. and was told that Medicare would be my prime ins. and Tricare secondary to pick up the rest of the costs. If I have neither, I will not get the surgery I need probably because (as I have heard) that under the new government program I will probably be thought of as "too old" for the surgery and considering I have other health problems might not be "worthy" according to Obama's plan.

I have been fighting this bill, but who can fight as fast as Obama can push? He is destroying everyone in this country except the rich liberals who are getting privileges and pay-offs in some manner...and anti-Americans who support him, and those already on the "entitled" roles.

It is sickening. I wish that man would get a real grip on what bad he is doing to our country, our seniors, our businesses and our children. He is totally evil. I can't even find the words (that I can write here) to say about how bad he is.

Note: I just called TriCare. They said I will always have TriCare for Life, once I go on Medicare. Ha...Ha...if there is no Medicare and no TriCare then I am doomed. Obviously even the "experts" at TriCare are unaware of what this bill will do.

I am quite certain that if the employer wants to change to the public option, there will be no barrier to that. But there won’t be any tweaking of a private group policy allowed to save money, so you’re probably correct about that.

But that would mean the employee would not be able to keep the medical insurance they currently have, which goes against obamma promise?

You nailed it, rawhide. Obama is going to blame the companies, not himself, for screwing you over. I call that by a very blunt term: Lying.
