Vancouver is alot like Auckland with tall mountains. It is very beautiful. It is similar to Portland in many ways.

As DieHard said, Cairns is too far north to be at any real risk, but is also well protected by the Great Barrier Reef.
The alert hasn’t yet been cancelled for south eastern Australia, but Cairns isn’t even in the alert area.

There was a large quake near the LA basin that very night. The reason I remember it so clearly is it was one of my first times getting to first base with the gal next door.
Let me get this straight, djf.
You only got to *first base* and the EARTH MOVED?
D*mn, you're good!
Cheers!

I’m looking at the chart you so thoughtfully posted, and I don’t understand how there can be an earthquake of negative magnitude.

Lake Taupo is the most dangerous supervolcano nobody has ever heard of. Erupts a lot more often than Yellowstone or Toba.

It certainly is!
I have a neighbor in Waiatarua — he’s an interesting if eccentric fellow — who has examined rock carvings near Lake Taupo, determined that they are of Phoenician origin (!) and dated them to a couple centuries before-and-leading-up-to the Taupo explosion. And the settlement disappears entirely thereafter.
He has taken castings of the carvings and they make a great deal of sense!
He even has one carving that looks to be a fairly good (if somewhat inaccurate) map of the globe, including all continents. And another one that is a reasonably accurate map of New Zealand. And another one that looks like a very good drawing of a Phoenician boat, at full sail.
He’s written a book about it and, naturally, everyone thinks he’s cracked. But I’m not sure I do...

Thank you. I’m glad he’s further north. He won’t return to Gold Coast (Brisbane) until Saturday and I believe that area is a little more at risk.

Thanks! To the best of my knowledge all of New Zealand is OK for now...
I have been listening to Radio New Zealand all nite (an excellent state-owned-and-operated radio station — like the BBC used to be) and if anything had happened anywhere in NZ they would have been first to report it. They’re good that way.
So far, nothing... (fingers crossed)
God Willing it will stay that way!

Who is the author and what is the book title...I like “cracked people”, like the ones who spend 120 years building a boat with no signs of rain....
