What area?
The only area under a tsunami warning is New Zealand.
Quake occured nowhere near a full or new moon. Just pointing that out because the Berkland nutters won’t.
Certainly the east coast of Australia and, likely, other parts of the South Pacific.
150 km (95 miles) WNW of Invercargill, New Zealand
175 km (110 miles) WSW of Queenstown, New Zealand
300 km (185 miles) W of Dunedin, New Zealand
825 km (510 miles) SW of WELLINGTON, New Zealand
> What area?
Invercargill is New Zealand’s southernmost large town. It’s right at the bottom of the South Island on the East Coast.
This happened 100 km west of that, so any waves will be smacking into Fiordland (largely uninhabited deep fiords) and up the West Coast. Next major population would be Nelson, up at the top of the South Island, then Wellington on the Cook Straight.
(Wellington might be in for a rough time if there are Tsunami as the Wellington Harbor is susceptible to seiching. That’s when water swirls round-and-round-and-round a bay toilet-bowl style, picking up debris and momentum each time it goes ‘round.)
I shall be watching with interest...

BrownSpeak: #newzealand yah! Finally..it took an earthquake for everyone to notice us
At least they have a sense of humor!
Hope everything turns out well.
Cheers, mate! Who knows — when I wake up tomorrow morning I might just have that waterfront property I always dreamed about!
Bad day to go fishing out there I guess. :) Hopefully its going to actualize in non populated areas.
So many of our Obama Voting Public is too stupid to realize the Richter Scale is logarithmic, not liner.
They hear 7.0 and then 7.8 and think, "well, it's only wafer thin".
Thanks for the post. This could be really big news.
bttt and prayers, this could be bad.
It’s probably silly for me to speculate, but I will anyway...
The West Coast of the South Island has a spine of solid rock called the Southern Alps, running from top-to-bottom. This lies along a fault line — hence the Alps and the many earthquakes that happen there.
If I had to guess I’d say this earthquake would have been on that fault line. And any resultant Tsunami has got alot of water to move before it hits shore: the water is quite deep there.
When it gets to shore, it has the fjords in Fjordland to use up its energy on — and that’s long before it even reaches Nelson.
My guess is that it isn’t going to amount to much.
(and with my luck I could be horribly wrong. Let’s hope not!)
BTTT
Doubtful it’s a big deal - the population exposed to serious shaking is quite small and the nature of the fault is such that motion is mostly strike-slip rather than subduction.
Still. A bad day to go fishing IMO. Hope no one gets hurt.
Bondi Beach is in Australia..
This is New Zealand on the South East coast..
