Great. I wanted to sleep tonight.
Thanks mate — I wouldn’t go fishing today for all the tea in China!
Yup,I know.I've surfed it.well...I didn't really *surf* it but I've walked it.I didn't know that the quake was off the *east* coast of NZ.I don't know enough about tsunmais to know whether or not that means that it couldn't hit Australia's coast.
Well, now, we ain’t all nuts.
As a yute, I remember very much seeing a totally full moon from my porch in upstate NY back about 68.
There was a large quake near the LA basin that very night.
The reason I remember it so clearly is it was one of my first times getting to first base with the gal next door.
Now, we are talking gravity and forces and rotational physics and orbital physics here, so don’t be so harsh.
Remember that something as simple as the three body gravitational problem is unsolved.
(grin!) New Zealand is a Civil Defense Officer’s dream assignment!
(I was in Civil Defense and disaster planning for a few years either side of 2000)
We got lucky this past year with Ruapehu’s lahar. Fortunately it didn’t amount to much this time around (but it could have!)
All of NZ is in the “Ring of Fire” area for old volcanoes...
the Pacific rim is rockin’.
Dad was stationed in NZ while waiting for his Marine battalion to hit the beaches of Guadalcanal. He always talked about retiring to NZ but never did make it back there......
South East Australia is under tsunami alert at this time.
Trying to remember
Is it Mt Egmont that is the old volcano in Auckiand ???
Then theres the volcano in Banks Penisular between Lyttleton and Akaroa...
Yes,I know that NZ is an earthquake/volcano zone.In fact,I once went to a town on the North Island called Rotorua which is a big geothermal energy area.I guess they pipe this energy into homes and businesses for free heat and things like that. The town *did* have a pretty strong sulfur smell to it...at least parts of the town did.
Thank your Dad for us...
If it wasnt for the presense of the Amierican soldiers and Marines, NZ would have been taken over by the Japanese...

DETAILS:
TSUNAMI THREAT TO LOW-LYING COASTAL AREAS
A threat of MAJOR LAND INUNDATION, FLOODING, DANGEROUS WAVES AND STRONG OCEAN
CURRENTS exists for several hours from 09:30 pm (EST) Wednesday.
COMMUNITY RESPONSE ADVICE FROM THE LORD HOWE ISLAND POLICE :
- People are strongly advised to go to higher ground, at least ten metres above
sea level, or if possible move at least one kilometre away from all beaches
and the water’s edge of harbours and coastal estuaries.
- Take only essential items that you can carry including important papers,
family photographs and medical needs.
- It may be in your own interests to walk to safety if possible to avoid
traffic jams.
- If you cannot leave the area take shelter in the upper storey of a sturdy
brick or concrete multi-storey building.
- Boats in harbours, estuaries or shallow coastal water should return to shore.
Secure your boat and move away from the waterfront.
- Vessels already at sea should stay offshore in deep water until further
advised.
- Do not go to the coast to watch the tsunami, as there is the possibility of
dangerous, localised land inundation of the immediate foreshore.
- Check that your neighbours have received this advice.
CAUTION:
Tsunami waves are more powerful than the same size beach waves, with the first
wave not necessarily being the largest.
Low-level effects may be observed in neighbouring coastal areas. People are
advised to take care.
