GOP Looks for at Least 20 'No' Votes

WASHINGTON -- Opponents of Judge Sonia Sotomayor's nomination to the Supreme Court suggested they would consider it a victory if more than half of the Senate's 40 Republicans voted against her in this week's confirmation hearing, as the GOP grapples with how aggressively to challenge the nominee. Many Republicans said they viewed 23 "no" votes as a benchmark, because that would be one more than Chief Justice John Roberts received in 2005 and would reflect a significant protest vote. Others said that if the Senate GOP were to split roughly in half, that would signal support to conservatives who oppose Judge Sotomayor without angering Hispanic voters with a wholesale dismissal of her nomination.

Are you drunk? The Republicans didn't Bork anyone. And the Dems can't "lose", they have a majority.

Sober up.

Whooped is whooped any way you look at it. It's telling that even the “fans” discount any chance of winning by just thinking how many points can we score against a division I team. Kinda like we at The Citadel considered it a good show when we only lost to Army 35-27 in 1967.

What visciousness-no I don’t want her to be torn apart personally (but TOUGH questions would be appreciated, and so WOULD voting agaisnt her enmasse because of her judicial philosophy).

WRONG! The GOP could have blocked this by having all committee members vote NAY.

"judicial philosophy" is not supposed to have any bearing on how members vote. Traditionally, if a nominee has the required education and credentials, they should be voted in.

It's the Democrats who started campaigning against qualified Republican nominees only because they were conservative.

Soyomayor couldn't be more Left-wing that Souter, so it's stupid to go to mattresses over a vote they're going to lose anyway.

Not this Republican. You don't challenge this mental midget and identity politics baffoon from getting on the court, you will pay. And no 23 votes against is not a challenge.

In case they missed it, your “base” hates you right now. Scheming how many votes will bring you applause or temper our attitudes about you only makes it worse.

I agree. All they seem to stand for anymore is pure politics, and playing this sort of numbers game makes it obvious.

They don’t have a majority in the Judicial Committee. And if they stopped her and Obama picked another nominee, do you think it would be more reasonable choice? Cut it out. They have to be smart about their opposition. At least smarter than some jaboni sitting at his computer yelling.

“Why not vote against her, if you find her statements and apparent “judicial philosophy” unseemly? Nothing to lose.”

Because, the democrats have the votes to put Dr. Kevorkian on scotus if they so desire and sotamayer is actually a decent pick considering obama is a marxist. Dumping sotomayer may result in something much much worse and there is nothing the republicans can do to stop it.

Wrong, Deb, as I know what you are getting at (have basically a traitor to the “Oath” on the Supreme Court) is NOT acceptable, we are not playing with “legos” here we are talking about “real” life and real issues which affect our nation, and heritage. If one has a philosophy which does not hold to our “rule of law”-the constitution, then Judicial Philosophy ABSOLUTELY DOES matter!

WRONG! Even if all GOP committee members vote NAY, the dems will still easily get the issue to the floor on a party-line committee vote.

Give it a rest. Although it’s difficult to decipher what the hell you’re talking about, I suggest you save your outrage for something based on reality.

"You'll forgive Republicans for holding to the tradition that presidents should have the nominees they want. They actually respect the office. It's the Democrats who abandon all civility and respect because of party politics. It's the Democrats who destroy and maim in the name of diversity.

Deb, I agree with you in principle, however we must remember that we are literally fighting an internal war for the survival of our country. I seem to recall another war, a couple of hundred years ago, in which a certain king's troops fought according to established rules and protocol of war, while their rebel opponents instead adopted whatever tactics where necessary to win. Do you recall the outcome?

We must also remember that the Democrats have most of the media in their hip pocket. Therefore, regardless of what type of tactics Democrats and Republicans use, the Dems are always portrayed positively and the Republicans negatively. Keeping this in mind, we have nothing to lose by doing WHATEVER is necessary to hold back the current Marxist tide. And standing there reading the Queensberry rules to the schoolyard bully is going to accomplish nothing other than the assurance of a thorough beating.

I say fight the Dems with everything at our disposal, and forget about how Katie Couric might portray our efforts to the racially-obsessed mob.

Why don’t you?

I have outrage that the GOP stands for NOTHING..

They need a spine, and they don’t have one.

Why don’t they vote against a bad nominee? They don’t have to confirm her.

“Dumping sotomayer may result in something much much worse and there is nothing the republicans can do to stop it.”

This is a moot point, really. Republicans can’t stop her even if they try, and if Obama had wanted to nominate a Marxist he would have in the first place.
