CA: Ballot initiative to end state benefits for illegal immigrants and their U.S.-born children
LA Times ^ | July 13, 2009 | By Teresa Watanabe

The measure would end public benefits to illegal residents, challenge the citizenship of their U.S.-born children, cut welfare payments to those children and impose new birth certificate requirements.

The target: Illegal immigrants and their U.S.-born children who receive public benefits.

The plan: a California ballot initiative that would end public benefits for illegal immigrants, cut off welfare payments for their children and impose new rules for birth certificates.

"We will be out in full force to qualify this initiative," said Barbara Coe, who helped develop Proposition 187, the 1994 measure that would have ended benefits to illegal immigrants but was ruled unconstitutional. "Illegals and their children are costing the state billions of dollars. It's invasion by birth canal."

Don’t worry, even if this passes, the 9th Circus will overturn it just like they did with Proposition 187.

This thing will be overturned faster than Joe Biden’s hair plugs.

These initiatives fair better when they are kept very simple. Seems like three or four simple ballot measures would be better than one that has too many issues.

Imagine the hate fest that will surround this coming from the Left and from the institutional Republicans.

Does not each state determine eligibility for those who receive state welfare benefits? Why would that be an issue for the federal courts?

State-specific ballot initiatives have a history of being appealed to and overturned by the 9th.

This might be an effort to get the "birthright citizenship" fraud overturned.

Interesting.

LOL. Seriously though it’s too bad this measure won’t make it because cutting those benefits would save some bucks for the state.

Nah, in these dimwits’ minds, it’s far better to just raise taxes.

After all the work you put in to this, it will be thrown out in 30 seconds by liberal judge #1.

Some liberal judge with a background in community activism will overturn this ten minutes after it passes and it will be consigned to the dustbin.

(Pardon my cynicism.)

Sure. It will get overturned.

But I’m surrised they are ven discussing putting it on the ballot in the first place.

(Now, let’s look at who opposes it.

If I recall correctly, it was suspended by the first federal judge who heard it, and the State of California decided not to pursue it further. I don't think it even made it to the 9th Circus.
