More than 10,000 houses collapse as earthquake hits China

An earthquake rocked China tonight, causing at least 10,000 homes to collapse and injuring more than 300 people. The quake, measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale, hit Yunnan province's Yao'an county in the south west of the country. It was was followed by eight aftershocks. So far there have been no reports of deaths.

But Chinese official state media said that at least 336 people were injured, with 30 cases serious. More than 40,000 houses were damaged by the tremor – of which a quarter collapsed. State officials said they were sending 4,500 tents, 3,000 quilts and other relief materials to Yao'an. And hundreds of extra police have been dispatched to the disaster zone, a quake-prone, mountainous region that lies on China's southern border with Thailand and Burma. I It also borders Sichuan province, where a magnitude-7.9 quake last year left almost 90,000 people dead or missing. In 1988, a 7.1-magnitude quake in Yunnan killed more than 930 people. More than 15,000 people died after a magnitude-7.7 earthquake in the province in 1970.

Apparently it was a 5.7. That wouldn’t do much damage here in California though the area is capable of much larger ones that could level the place...

Makes one wonder about all of those high-rise buildings the Chi-Comms have and are building. How much have they cut corners on earthquake safety, etc. because they don't give a damn about building standards?

I see a 5.7 in China, and a 6 off Easter Island.

Maybe the Gods are angry we discovered the fountain of youth.

Yao’an is quite mountainous and hilly; most people live on the slopes of hills, meaning if you have a foundation crack or shift, the entire house slides down the hill, rather than settling/dropping a foot.

All those numbers are bogus because except for the 336 injured, a count could not have been made so quick
