Why Are Southerners So Fat?
Time ^ | 7/9/2009 | Claire Suddath

People from Mississippi are fat. With an adult obesity rate of 33%, Mississippi gobbled its way to the "chubbiest state" crown for the fifth year in a row, according to a new joint report by Trust For America's Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Alabama, West Virginia, and Tennessee aren't far behind, with obesity rates over 30%. In fact, eight out of the 10 fattest states are in the South. The region famous for its biscuits, barbecue and pecan pies has been struggling with its weight for years — but then again, so has the rest of the country. Wisconsin loves cheese, New Yorkers scarf pizza, and New Englanders have been known to enjoy a crab cake or two. So why is the South so portly?

Gee whiz...TIME left this fact out: the south has, in general, a much larger percentage of African Americans than any other segment of the country.

A glance at the Calorielab graphic from the actual article and your postulation is clear.

I think you’re on to something about the food industry and “better living through chemistry”. I see too many folks who are active (ie. working their butts off), eating more moderately, and still heavy.

I read somewhere that the artificial sweeteners in products like Diet Coke actually make you gain weight, because they are many times sweeter, chemically, than sugar -- raising your addiction to the sweet taste; so you crave more sweets from other sources.

Sugar, salt and fat are the three most addictive food substances that will get out of control, ruining one's natural ability to listen to the body's cravings for proper nutrition, minerals and vitamins contained in foods. If not for sugar, fat and salt, studies of children have shown that if they are presented with a buffet of nutritious foods, they will naturally select a balanced diet.

Because they move very slow and as a result, they do not burn as many calories. (Or maybe they move slow, because they are too fat.) In all series, I have worked contructions jobs in the south and have have worked construction jobs in the north with southerners, in in my experience, the southerners are about a third less productive than construction workers from the Northeast and Midwest.

I’d like to see a demographic breakdown on this. It wouldn’t be PC though

...a canned half-pear, a gob of mayonnaise in the center, shredded cheddar sprinkled on top, it was served on a piece of iceberg lettuce ... "salad" I was informed. Ooookay.

You haven't lived until you've had a church-basement supper that includes a salad made with shredded cabbage and carrots encased in green or orange Jello, with mayonnaise dressing. (barf)

Meanie ... I have to take a trip to find a Church’s, and I love their ‘broasted’ chicken.

Some people walk and run around the track but they drive their car to the track and home again.

Here in the border state of Maryland, our local strip mall has to ticket the SUVs that are illegally parked at the curb in front of the gym, where people can be seen through the window doing cardio on walking machines. They won't park in the lot that is -- and I am not making this up -- ten to twenty steps away.

Fat holds a lot of water, which is a necessity for perspiration. Latent heat of evaporation cools the body. Fat around the vital organ region acts as an insulator to moderate temp increase and decrease rate.

Thank you for the physiology brush-up! Makes sense... So that means fat is desirable year-round!

The yankees moving down here wouldn’t be so bad if the didn’t try to change it into the same damned cesspool they moved away from

“Yep. After losing my extra weight, I have to exercise and weigh daily (as well as controlling portions) to keep it off. And my metabolism is slow, so I end up being hungry a lot of the time. I don’t like that part of it, but I like having a 23 BMI.”

You sound like me. I exercise 7 days a week, 365 days a year, for an hour and half. Walking with leg and hand weights. I lost 40 pounds, my bmi is 18, which makes me slightly underweight. I weigh myself daily to keep a close watch on things going up or down. I also keep a food diary so I’m accountable for every calorie I ingest. Pain in the rear? You bet. Do I like what I see when I look in the mirror? Absolutely. Does hubby like it? No, he likes me curvier but I feel better about myself, which translates to benefits for him.

Well you know what a TEXAN fears the most?

A Yankee with a U-HAUL!!!

Difference between a Yankee and a Damn Yankee?

A Yankee visits and goes home—a Damn Yankee stays!

Perv dangers, not laziness.

no--in this case it was because the portly kids didn't want to walk... and the portly mom drove them... and it gave her a chance to stop at the end of the drive way to pick up the mail... i'm not kidding! i don't think this paints the mom as lazy--afterall, it would be less work for her if she made her kids walk five houses down to the bus stop... she was overindulging him... it was some town in Texas... maybe Houston... it was all about how overweight people were...

another reason was people could go out to eat quite cheaply, and the portions were huge... they could never make those meals at home for the same low cost... for $8.95, a single guy bought a dinner of a 2 large pork chops suffocated in gravy, mashed potatoes, corn on the cob, buttermilk biscuit and i believe there was another side dish like green beans with bacon... and he washed it all down with beer... he could never create the same thing at home for the price, so he bought it and ate... and he eats like that often...

he also went to a place where he would order this massive steak... if he finished it all, he would get the plate for free!

i know there are more reasons for the portliness... not everyone fits in these categories...

I have lived in Ga. all my life.
Years ago I dated a New Yorker.
At first I found him “exciting and worldly” but then I started to realize just how negative he was about everything. I was constantly told how much better NYC was than Atlanta, how much more there was to do there, blah, blah, blah. I was told how everyone in Ga. was a “Yahoo” and how the good ole boys looked out for their kind only.

Had a teacher in college from NYC. Same story. SHe was a raging B! We were constantly told how we as students would never make it in NYC, we weren’t smart enough, folks there have it together, etc.

IN both cases I asked them, “So, why did you leave NYC and come here? Why are you still here in Ga. if it sucks SO badly?” Neither could ever give me a straight answer.

It's not just southerners. Up here in Maine, we're really fat. Especially the woman. Big fatties and they're proud of it. It used to be fat people were ashamed by the way they looked and dressed appropriately. Now the fatties were tight fitting clothes, cut off t-shirts as a badge of honor. And they're not fat and jolly either.

With the advent of HVAC central air, the perspiration is reduced but the eating habits are reacting more slowly. I wonder if any plot-to-graph has been done to reflect the advent of wide-spread air conditioning in the Southern climates?

“Now Sweet Tea, fried chicken, pecan pies......yummy.”

Don’t forget coconut cake, guava jelly, cornbread dressing, and all manner of beans flavored with bacon fat.
