Episcopal Bishop calls individual salvation 'heresy,' 'idolatry'

ANAHEIM, CA - Episcopal Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori says it's "heresy" to believe that an individual can be saved through a sinner's prayer of repentance.

In her opening address to the church's General Conference in California, Jefferts Schori called that "the great Western heresy: that we can be saved as individuals, that any of us alone can be in right relationship with God."

The presiding bishop said that view is "caricatured in some quarters by insisting that salvation depends on reciting a specific verbal formula about Jesus."

According to Schori, it is heresy to believe that an individual's prayer can achieve a saving relationship with God. "That individualist focus is a form of idolatry, for it puts me and my words in the place that only God can occupy."

“Fear not, bd; this comes from a woman who wears a rainbow oven mitt as a mitre!”

That makes my day, thank you! My family will be shivering in the cold at Old Orchard Beach next week and my brother celebrates his 25th alumni celebration at Bates this fall. All we need for a terrific Maine celebration is for a Collins and Snowe conservative epiphany.

But the good bishop is right to say that a set verbal prayer COULD become heresy. Believing that merely saying such a thing, by rote, puts you in a right relationship with God, must surely be incorrect. Anyway, I was under the impression that “being saved” was an ongoing process, not a one-off event...

The baptism and communion, in my understanding,
are outward signs of salvation.

This guy wasn’t going to have much chance to show his “outward signs”...

There’s no reason to give this bishop any credit as she has already rejected the clear teachings of scripture with her other proclamations.

We vacation up there every three or for years. The last time we stayed ay a B&B called The Billow House. Quaint, inexpensive and right on the beach in Saco Bay.

I have a good friend at work who is a devout Catholic. She is working on me - LOL. In a good way, of course. Last year I attended a series of meetings at her church called “Coming Home”. Very interesting. I’m not totally averse to becoming a RC.

Ah, ha, I need not read further than to know that this "woman priest" is attempting to point out the truth of the bible and misses its most important part - Salvation by Grace Alone, Once and for All Times offered to each person

If, as in the words of that woman, who herself fails to know and understand the words of Christ on the cross to the thief that believing on Him gave the thief salvation, there is no other way to salvation - certainly NOT corporate salvation, as she must believe.

Sadly, her words have condemned her for she knows not the truth of salvation and spreads her lies to others who are lost and looking for salvation.

“her mitt is like her preaching - off balance.”

Her lickspittels, limpwrists, toadies, fellow travelers and running dogs likely would claim she wears it at a “jaunty angle”! :)

At my church it has been all about the new building and the outrageously expensive new organ, which I’m still trying to figure out the necessity for.

Other than it being a bribe to get the music director to stay I can’t see why it is needed. The cost was in excess of $2 million and that doesn’t include the costs of remodeling the sanctuary so that it will fit in the space.

These days it isn’t so much about spiritual salvation as it is about “pomp and show”.

yeah - they’ll always have a twisted angle to everything.

I’d love for some pastor(s) to come out against her teachings and hold her feet to the fire w/scripture. I believe it’s their duty - lest none be led astray by ‘her’ heresy.

new organ

The only organ, IMO, that is necessary to praise God is a heart. He judges us by our heart and not the sound of music.

Yeah, I just read it. I remember the Boston Phoenix in the early 70’s when I was an undergraduate student. Of course, the woman is a lunatic. Why she bothers with religion is beyond me.

2 Corinthians 11:13 For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, masquerading as apostles of Christ. 14And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. 15It is not surprising, then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve.

The same goes for women.

The presiding bishop said that view is "caricatured in some quarters by insisting that salvation depends on reciting a specific verbal formula about Jesus."

Her argument is with YHvH.

Paul clearly identified what was required.

Yah'shua(Jesus) => YHvH is my salvation.

Romans 10:13 for "WHOEVER WILL CALL ON THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED."

Joel 2:32 "And it will come about that whoever calls on the name of the LORD Will be
delivered; .....
