Episcopal Bishop calls individual salvation 'heresy,' 'idolatry'

ANAHEIM, CA - Episcopal Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori says it's "heresy" to believe that an individual can be saved through a sinner's prayer of repentance.

In her opening address to the church's General Conference in California, Jefferts Schori called that "the great Western heresy: that we can be saved as individuals, that any of us alone can be in right relationship with God."

The presiding bishop said that view is "caricatured in some quarters by insisting that salvation depends on reciting a specific verbal formula about Jesus."

According to Schori, it is heresy to believe that an individual's prayer can achieve a saving relationship with God. "That individualist focus is a form of idolatry, for it puts me and my words in the place that only God can occupy."

But you can’t even do that sincerely unless you have first been regenerated by the Holy Spirit as predestined by God. Otherwise you are just deceiving yourself.

My family has rented a cottage on Colby Ave. in Ocean Park for over 50 years. I still watch with amusement as my grandchildren step into the ocean for the first time and freeze for a moment and recall my sons doing it and my freezing when I was their age. There is nothing as cold as the surf at Old Orchard on a hot summer day.

We spend quite a bit of time at virginia Beach since my son lives in Norfolk. The water there is not quite as refreshing and the tourists don’t speak French.

You said — Otherwise you are just deceiving yourself.

If one does as Romans 10:9-10 says (and it does say that), then I’ll leave God’s part up to Him. I’ll speak to man’s part. God knows how to take care of Himself...

And, on the converse..., if one does *not* do what Romans 10:9-10, that’s all the evidence that I need, to tell that person that they are not saved.

She’s right on one point. A prayer of repentance and submission ALONE won’t save UNLESS it reflects one’s heartfelt faith.

She created a straw man. Nobody says "prayer saves you." God's grace saves those individuals who respond to Him in faith. Prayer is a means of expressing that faith.

I suspect that the new organ is not for the aggrandizement of the Lord so much as it is for the Rector.

And I agree with your post.

“fundy”? As in one who adheres to the fundamentals of the historic Christian faith, once delivered to the saints? If so, I can assure you that this Bishop is not one.

“Sounds like this Bishop needs to read the Bible a bit more.”
That’s the problem, they don’t believe the Bible.

Well..., then, you ought-a try Oregon and Washington beaches, then... LOL...

They’re quite cold and perhaps a bit colder than there. Today, I see Oregon beach water temperatures are around 52-55 degrees... :-)

Oregon and Washington have great beaches, if you’re not too concerned about the water temperatures.

just another example of people being puffed up by vain
philosophies and not the work that Jesus the Christ did for
us.If you truly believe in Christs work, it doesn’t
matter if you recite an old prayer, or just groan. God knows
your heart, and you can’t fake it.

Either of you ever hear about "Lilith"? She supposedly was Adam's 1st wife and was created from the same dust as he, rather than from a rib, therefore she was on equal footing...according to the Biblical legend. Adam wanted her back.

Hmmm... I don't recall that story from the Bible.

We are typically up there the first two weeks of June. It's not hot (cool actually), but we do enjoy our very early (for us) 5am walks on the beach watching the sunrise. It's never very crowded when we are there either.

Ubuntu. That word doesn't have any "I"s in it. The I only emerges as we connect - and that is really what the word means: I am because we are, and I can only become a whole person in relationship with others. There is no "I" without "you," and in our context, you and I are known only as we reflect the image of the one who created us. Some of you will hear a resonance with Martin Buber's I and Thou and recognize a harmony. You will not be wrong.

It's always entertaining to see the ways in which modernist doctrines always self-destruct by means of their inherent contradictions. In the above quote she throws Descartes under the bus. For the "father of modern philosophy", the beginning of all knowledge is the 'cogito': "I think, therefore I am." He didn't say "Since you happen to be over there, and I'm thinking, we are!"

I'm not familiar with 'Ubuntu', but wouldn't it be amusing if the word for the first person singular pronoun was 'u'!

They have chosen the worldly viewpoint over God’s Word.

I have even had a lib “Christian” tell me that the bible was written by “angry men”... she even almost slipped and said “white”.

Since everything in the bible contradicts their worldview, they choose their (Satanic inspired) worldview.

“They’re quite cold and perhaps a bit colder than there. Today, I see Oregon beach water temperatures are around 52-55 degrees... :-)”

That can’t be! Al Gore and Henry Waxman have assured us that global warming has raised the temperature in the waters of the west coast so much that the glaciers are melting.

But, if the glaciers are melting in Alaska and, looking at the globe in my office, Alaska is near the top and Washington and Oregon are lower down than Alaska so the cold melt would flow down, I guess the water could be colder, but it is unnaturally caused by global warming so you can’t compare it to the naturally cold water of Old Orchard (oranges and apples).

Of course..., there’s nothing unnatural about global warming (or global cooling) as it’s all a very natural process that has been going on for centuries and millennia.

So, I tell people that I do believe in global warming (and global cooling) as it’s a very natural process that’s been going on for longer than any industrial age that we’ve been in... LOL...

As for the waters being “unnaturally colder” in Oregon or Washington..., that’s kind of like saying the the earth unnaturally revolves around the sun... :-)
