UPDATE: Palin To Resign As Alaska Governor UPDATE: KTUU-TV in Anchorage reports that Palin not only won't seek re-election, but will resign later this month.
ORIGINAL POST: Gov. Sarah Palin (R) has announced she will not run for re-election in 2010, CNN reports. She's scheduled to make an announcement shortly.
The decision frees Palin to travel in the Lower 48 as she considers a potential run for president in 2012. A re-election campaign could also have been tough on the former vice presidential nominee; her approval rating has dropped from stratospheric highs, and a number of candidates in both parties are said to be considering runs.
Even if she won, the race would have been dominated by the specter of a presidential bid, giving her adversaries an opportunity to wound her politically. She's still fending off ethics complaints, many spurred by the "Troopergate" scandal.

I am proud of her and support her. She is a great American.
I believe she will assist others greatly in 2010, and will run herself in 2012...and she has my full support.
GO SARAH GO!
Perhaps you missed it. She is resigning by the end of the month and turning over power to her LT Governor.
We will have to wait & see, but this move imho is quite calculated.
Yep, see my post # 280.
This clown talking now on FOX is from the LIBERAL Alaska Newspaper
I have a short keyboard.
What news cycle?
Friday afternoons are notorious for news dumps. Right now, most people are concerned about getting their propane tanks filled for the weekend bbq or stocking up on suntan lotion. And it's not like the MSM was out shouting from the rooftops about the pathetic June job numbers anyway (as they would've been doing were Dubya still in office).
As for SP's motivation, I'll reserve judgment until I hear from Sarah herself. I'll let morons like Keith Olbermann partake in gleeful speculation.
She may just be leaving politics all together. Resigning as a first term governor wouldnt make sense politically to me. She may just want to raise her child and end the dirty attacks on her and her family.
I agree with you. I think she has had enough of todays modern politics. It’s enough to make anyone sick. Have a good life Sarah.
Other people have had to face these problems as well. Did they all quit?
We’ve had the left say she’s over reacting to the criticisms of her, and I defended her on it. And then she quits.
Sorry, I’m just severely underwhelmed at the moment.
ITA. She doesn’t do anything without a purpose.
Bill Kristol on Fox, “If I had to guess, I’d say we just saw the opening of the 2012 presidential race.”
Vaguely reminiscent of Nixon’s “Last Press Conference.”
Hardly
Does anyone know if Sarah’s speech today (the entire speech) is posted on YouTube? Stupid Fox News was late the the ‘party’ and then cut off the video of Sarah’s speech mid-stream.
It’s a very smart move. She will no longer have to spend time, money, and energy fighting the evil corrupt Demo pols in Alaska.
Now she can focus on the future.
Obama started his campaign in early 2007. It takes a whole two years now to mount a successful Presidential campaign.
Sarah has good advisors. She is shrewd and tough. Her resignation speech today sounded like a shot over the bow to initiate her Presidential campaign.
My bet is she is setting up to run for the House in 2010 to get national experience and exposure!
Good analogy.
No she doesn’t.
Her brother is on Fox claiming that she is basically burnt out from all of the time she is spending defending herself. He says that Sarah and her staff spend more then 80% of their time on the stream of attacks rather then governing Alaska.
He says there is no ethics issues that are going to pop up and that she isnt resigning to run for higher office.
Quitting her job with a speech like that isn’t the best way to begin a presidential campaign.
