UPDATE: Palin To Resign As Alaska Governor UPDATE: KTUU-TV in Anchorage reports that Palin not only won't seek re-election, but will resign later this month.
ORIGINAL POST: Gov. Sarah Palin (R) has announced she will not run for re-election in 2010, CNN reports. She's scheduled to make an announcement shortly.
The decision frees Palin to travel in the Lower 48 as she considers a potential run for president in 2012. A re-election campaign could also have been tough on the former vice presidential nominee; her approval rating has dropped from stratospheric highs, and a number of candidates in both parties are said to be considering runs.
Even if she won, the race would have been dominated by the specter of a presidential bid, giving her adversaries an opportunity to wound her politically. She's still fending off ethics complaints, many spurred by the "Troopergate" scandal.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Gov. Sarah Palin will resign her office in a few weeks, she said during a news conference at her Wasilla home Friday morning.
Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell will be inaugurated at the Governor’s Picnic at Pionner Park in Fairbanks on Saturday, July 25, Palin said.
There was no immediate word as to why she will resign, though speculation has been rampant that the former vice presidential candidate is gearing up for a run at the 2012 Republican presidential nomination.
Palin made the announcement flanked by Parnell and most, if not all, of her cabinet.
Parnell ran unsuccessfully against Rep. Don Young in the Republican primary last year.
The stunning announcement by Palin opens the floodgates for the 2010 gubernatorial race. Speculation that Palin might not seek re-election had fueled further conjecture of who might run.

Really stunning .. beat me .. ;)
She may just be leaving the dirty
biz of politics. God bless her ..
she’s too good, has too many wonderful
qualities to be constantly vilified
and mocked incessantly.
I hope she doesn’t step down!!!!!!!!
Holy ****!
If she really is resigning, she must not be running for president. It makes no sense. Something must have happened.
I’ll wait for her announcement. It’s just specualtion.
Whatever she does regarding her office as Governor... she has to run in 2012.
Nice knowing ya Sarah!
What the heck is she doing?
My thoughts exactly.
Can you say “all in”?
This is a “faith” move, if I ever saw one.
She has been Called.
Is there an undisclosed health issue?
Didn’t see this coming. Why resign?????? It makes me think something is about to come out.
Good move, running for president and raising a family is a full time job.
Resignation is a BIG mistake if she actually aspires to higher, national office. Only three years as a governor in a very sparsely populated state will be a deal-breaker to a great number of Americans, if not to all but the most ardent Palin supporters.
“Cut and Run” Sarah - I can see it now.....
Saracuda or Quitacuda?
“Couldn't control spending - so, she quit!
Man oh man, how dumb can you get. If true, this all but ensures she will get nowhere..... just a small footnote in the history books - maybe.
To me this is devestating.....
Hmmmm...Not sure about this.
If she indeed is going to run for Prez in 2012 she is probably making the best decision out of three possible decisions.
It’s gotta be something like that.
