IF unnerving your opponent is half the battle in politics, then Sarah Palin appears to be doing quite well.
The Alaska Governor who shot to world fame last year as Republican candidate for the US vice-presidency has ruffled her critics' feathers again in her latest burst of publicity after claiming she could beat Barack Obama in a running race.
Left-leaning Democrat supporters such as the US political blog Daily Kos have taken the bait, ridiculing an interview published in the latest issue of Runner's World magazine in which Ms Palin says: "I betcha I'd have more endurance."
Daily Kos blogger Katy Kelleher seizes on one of the magazine's seven slick photos of Ms Palin in a jogging outfit to claim that the former vice-presidential hopeful "violates the flag code".
Ms Palin, a former beauty queen, is seen standing in a pose that shows off her legs while one elbow leans on a bunched-up US flag draped over a chair.
It is, declares Kelleher, a faux pas that would be regarded as a capital offence if committed by "the other side".
None of this nonsense would matter if it were not for the fact that the Alaska Governor is still being talked about as a presidential candidate for 2012.
Ms Palin was already in the news after spats with TV host David Letterman over her daughter.
The glamorous 45-year-old Governor, meanwhile, appears to be enjoying the celebrity amid rumours she might run for the US Senate next year to boost her national profile or, failing that, do a reality TV show.
Asked if she could beat Obama, Ms Palin said that determination and endurance made up for what she lacked in comparable physical strength. "So if it were a long race that required a lot of endurance, I'd win," she said.

Flag abuse? I don’t think so... it’s just laying over a chair. It’s not like it’s crumpled up on the ground with her standing on it....
I am on her side - sign me up!
Showing off a successful effort to lose the baby fat. I am impressed. It’s a lot of work, and she’s proud of it.
How silly. The flag is not touching the floor; nor is she wearing it; nor is she standing on it. The person that is accusing her needs to go back and read the facts.

It took me a while but, yes, there really is a flag in that photo. :=)
flag abuse? Hell the lefties would either be burning it or not have it in the photo at all, who are they trying to fool?
No kidding!
No to the Senate. No to the reality show. And don’t lean on the flag or allow it to be draped over the back of a chair.
Hang the flag properly or fold it and put it away.
Still, the left making noise about his is the highest level of hilarity. They support the idea of burning it to make a point. I do not.
Liberals don’t have any values of their own to live up to, but they are quick to point out when they believe conservatives have violated conservative values.
Yes...and this coming from people who support a moron who hates everything the flag stands for...
The way Obama smokes, he’d be rolling on the ground, coughing madly after the first few hundred feet or so.
Sarah would win, hands down!
She’s also gonna whoop his butt in the 2012 election.....
Sarah..? Abusing the flag..? But Bill Ayers STANDING on a crumpled flag in a Chicago alley..? That’s cool.
This is flag abuse!
