Many of you will know Aldi, the international retail giant owned by two reclusive German billionaires (hence the "Deutsche Küche" German delicatessen special purchases from time to time). Some because you shop there regularly, others because you read in the Wall Street Journal how they drove Walmart out of Germany (Legend has it that Aldi is the only company Walmart is afraid of because their overhead is so very low that they cannot beat them on price.). Of course they offer 4th of July BBQ items on their US web page as well. But did you know that Aldi celebrates 4th of July in Germany as well, offering their customers a selection of typically American food times - or at least what German customers consider "typically American".

MMMMM.....Spare Ribs and Jelly Beans........
I think i’d rather have some WeinerSchnitzel Red Cabbage and a Warsteiner.....
ALDI has really high quality stuff for Cheap.
THey have an incredibly low overhead. In fact, if you want to use a shopping cart, you have to feed a quarter (in the US - 1 EURO in Europe)in to release it from the lock-up chain. You get your coin back when you return the cart to the lock-up.
I’m gettin’ a powerful hankerin’ for some Sauerbraten.
I wonder what “jellybean” is in German? I bet the translation is hilarious.
They sell good wine and beer in some locations too.
The local Aldi went out of business because they couldn’t compete with WalMart and the Super Kmart.
Great prices on frozen fish! $3.49 for 1 1/2 lbs. That’s $2.35 a pound for ocean caught Whiting.
One of my cats won’t eat catfood, but she will eat tuna. So I’ve been going to Aldi for years, getting her tuna for about $0.49 per can (I buy a case at a time).
It’s certainly a “no frills” type store, but they do have good produce as well (albeit a somewhat limited selection).
We have been able to reduce our entire food bill in our house by over 50%. Coupled with rarely eating out, less than five times a year, and we spent less than $500. a month on food for a family of 4.
You shop the same places that I do! But, if you’re downtown someday, go to Tink Holl, the Chinese grocery at 3709 Payne. Tremendous produce, fresher than anywhere else, and extremely cheap. Also the best selection of fresh fish at less than half the cost of a chain grocery store. I’m heading down tomorrow.
If you live in Cleveland and shop at Giant Eagle, you are just a sucker.
“shop at Giant Eagle, you are just a sucker.”
Only for emergencies! There’s one two blocks from my house, but the Marc’s is only a mile away. So, if I’m really lazy,,,,,,,,,,,,
I can walk to the local Giant Eagle and the only thing I have bought there was just last week when they had 5 cases of Pepsi for $20. Hadn’t been in there for over a year. They just redesigned the store, looks nice, still way too expensive.
Gelee-Bonbons.
I won’t step foot in an Aldi’s in my area. The stores are dirty, their selection of name-brand items is poor, and the people in them too often smell like a mixture of sweaty socks and old fish. Plus, a lot of that generic crap just doesn’t taste as good as the name brand stuff does.
The largest concentration of Americans outside of the US is in Germany. Aldis selling “American” items is little different than your local store selling the wierd Mexican crap.
