[Governor] Palin Vanity Fair Article Reignites Feud Among Former Campaign Aides
Fox News ^ | July 1, 2009

Posted on 07/01/2009 10:49:59 AM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

A new Vanity Fair article on Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has re-ignited animosities among feuding high-profile Republican advisers who worked on Arizona Sen. John McCain's 2008 presidential campaign.

The in-depth profile, which describes Palin as the "sexiest and the riskiest brand in the Republican Party," raises questions about McCain's decision to pick the Alaska governor as his running mate and her "disastrous" performance in the 2008 campaign -- sparking a vicious back-and-forth between former advisers to the GOP ticket.

"Perhaps most painful, how could John McCain, one of the cagiest survivors in contemporary politics...ever have picked a person whose utter shortage of qualification for her proposed job all but disqualified him for his?" author Todd Purdum writes in his article published Tuesday.

The article also claims that top aides worried about Palin's "mental state" during the campaign -- with some suggesting Palin was suffering from postpartum depression following the recent birth of her son, Trig.

On Tuesday, editor of The Weekly Standard Bill Kristol -- who once served as informal adviser to McCain -- accused former campaign manager Steve Schmidt of spreading the idea to other campaign aides.

"In fact, one aide who raised this possibility in the course of trashing Palin's mental state to others in the McCain-Palin campaign was Steve Schmidt," Kristol wrote in his magazine blog posted Tuesday.

IIRC, Todd Purdum is a former New York Times reporter who is married to Dee Dee Myers, a former Clinton White House Press Secretary. So consider the source, as my mother used to say. And as for Steve Schmidt ... I enjoy posting here at FR, so I won't go into what I feel about him and the rest of the Keystone Kops at McCain08.

"her "disastrous" performance in the 2008 campaign"

What???? She was the reason McCain got the votes that he did. Her crowds were bigger than Obamas. Whats up with this revisionist crap? Soon historians will talk about McCain losing because he was "too conservative" and the GOP needed a more moderate candidate-LOL.

Just food for thought, really need no comment further.

Schmidt was importuned by several of the Republican aspirants for president earlier this year. (Mitt Romney sent him an antique chair to symbolize a seat at the table.) As a longtime admirer of McCain, he agreed initially to advise him from afar.

Palin was the only reason I and millions of conservatives actually voted for John McCain (which I deeply regret now). I guess they figure if they can keep lying about her, it will hurt her chances in 2012. Of course, this doesn’t explain why a truly unqualified candidate would even have a chance then, so why bash her if they believe that?

Frankly, I'm getting real tired of supposedly conservative media outlets giving this crap so much airtime and bandwidth.

No one but confirmed elitist leftists read Vanity Fair. If those conservative media outlets stop promoting this screed, the only people who will hear about this hitpiece will be the confirmed leftists who pay attention to leftist media outlets.

Their POV re: Gov. Palin has already been formed. They clearly hate her, so VF is preaching to the choir. This will not form opinion or change votes unless conservative media continues to promote this garbage.

Just keep in mind when reading this -- these people are pure scum.

I'd take Palin as president in a heartbeat over anyone currently in DC with the possible exception of Jim Inhoffe.

Because the dumbass RINO knew that without her he would have lost by 20+ points in the election.

Me too. I voted for Palin, not McCain. The most utterly unqualified candidate was obama, community organizer.

Total revisionist crap is right! Thye weakest part of the McCain campaign was...McCain. Of course. And we all know it.

Many around here said it when and even before he got the nod. He was a weak candidate who seemed to have little appetite for speaking to the aspirations of conservative Americans.

But Sarah Palin did that. Her selection gave his candidacy a boost in energy and in the polls.

The truth of the matter is that the selection of Palin as VP running mate was the one and only bright spot of an otherwise inept campaign.

The “September surprise” was handed to McCain by Bush on a silver platter. It was an unbelievable opportunity for McCain to set himself up as a conservative by rejecting the notion of a bailout for rich Wall Street bankers. He had the opportunity to lump his opponent with Bush on an unpopular policy, and I believe Bush actually “fell on his sword” as a political sacrifice to set up the scenario.

McCain bungled it badly, as shown to his response to question 3 in debate #1. The question was, essentially, “what do you propose doing about the financial crisis?” Instead of a clear-cut conservative principled market option with no bailout for wealthy bankers, McCain mumbled some incoherent response about “main street vs. Wall Street.”

It was a hanging curve ball that McCain should have smoked into the bleachers. He whiffed. I knew then he’d lost the election.

Palin was the only inspired thing he did to bring energy to his campaign. It’s sad to see the parasites and carrion-eaters in the GOP elite blame her for their own ineptitude.

For me this is just another example of how completely irrelevant the MSM has become. Another day...another Palin story, as if there is nothing else to report on. I was watching Fox News last night and they reported on Cap & Tax, Health Care, Iraq, Iran, etc.

I switched over to MSNBC during a commercial and the main topic of discussion for “Hardball” was Todd Palin

Now lets not be too judgmental. Mitt may have sent the chair as practice for his audition in HGTVs next “Design Star” competition...

For what it is worth ... this is another of a on going continuing series of attempts to demean, undermine, dismiss, and trivialize Sarah's STRENGTH right from the git go. They kept her out of sight as soon as the immediate response of the Conservative Republicans was seen.

Personally, she was the answer to prayer for our nation.

She is the best. Do not be misled. WATCH what she does. Not what they slantingly report about it.

That is an insult to Keystone Kops. When the FL Republican party called me to ask a donation about two months after the election and gave me the canned speech about running a great campaign, I started laughing so hard that I had to pull over.

This title is good too. This feud is between former McCain Aides (many who have morphed regularly between Romney and McCain camps) - those that were impressed by the authenticity and conservatism of Sarah Palin (Welch, Recher, Scheunemann) versus the Steve Schmidt ‘crew’ (Schmidt, Mark McKinnon, Tucker Eskew, Nicole Wallace, John Feehery, Carl Forti, Kevin Madden and Michelle Laxalt, etc, etc). This is not a feud of the GOP. It is clear that only conservatives need apply in 2012 and that excludes Rudy McRomney in all of its manifestations.
