Do you think that the people have made an idol out of our own government? Do we look to Washington to provide everything that we need as if it were the Almighty?
Yes. The federal government confiscates a great deal of wealth and then redistributes it to the States and select citizens. I remember reading about the Governor a month ago or so when she basically jumped up and down and praised Joe Biden for his unexpectedly “generous” stimulus for Michigan. It’s really quite pathetic.
I think that this is a ridiculous vanity. ~sheesh~
As idols go, it sure has a lousy yield. Most idols just sit there stupidly and do nothing. This idol devours all it sees.
I’m getting awfully tired of it’s appetite for offerings.
The government is worse that any idol. God only wants 10%.
Well we know that the Religion of the global environmentalist fanatics has taken strong hold on our govenment... The Church of the Greens is nothing more then reconstituted Pagan worship of Mother Nature.
and I thought people said we had to have seperation of church and state... LOL .... This piece of crap legislation that the House passed is a handcuff on every American forcing change that takes away many freedoms all in the name of their pagan gods....
It’s called secular humanism, and it is the new national religion.
Why not? It’s sure being run by “Born Again Pagans” that worship dirt!!!
I used to call it “Rome-on-the-Potomac”, but in the last few months, it has been driftng in the direction of “Buenos-Aires-on-the-Potomac”, or even “Caracas-on-the-Potomac”.

When we say the “Pledge of Allegiance” at our local civic group meeting, I make the mental reservation, “to the Republic for which it stands (whether that republic still in fact exists or not)”. Recall that the Roman imperial government from Augustus on maintained the fiction that the republic lived on by maintaining the visible trappings of the defunct republic, while the reality was the government had become a unitary dictatorship by the emperor, backed by the legions (when the legions stopped backing an incumbent emperor, either a replacement was quickly found, or civil war erupted among the generals until a new victor could be awarded the “purple”).
When huge expenditures and vast changes in public policy can be rammed through the Congress by the leadership, “unread” by the membership, you have the trappings of a republican government, but a reality of the legislators doing what they’re told, “or else”. This is at best the shadow of a republic, and shows little signs of being anything more in the foreseeable future, regardless which of the “centrist” parties holds office. The Republicans are going to the RHINOs, i.e., towards a Whig-like exctinction, and the Democrats will wallow in earmarked-to-the-max “corporate capitalism” until they turn the dollar into Zimbabwean toilet paper.
It took a long time for us to get in this mess. The power has been concentrated in Washington since at least FDR, the benevolent “god”.
Abso”friggin”lutely. Socialism is the name of the game in DC to be spread to all other states to keep the RATS in power for the elections of 2010 & 2012.
I think there may be some truth to this, and I’ve chosen my side.
Yep.
It’s a cesspool.
Some other aspect of Gaia will engross the fanatics of the next decades once global warmism goes out of style.
I agree, we now have a republic in name only.
So, I don't know whether "we" have made an idol of the government.
I do, however, believe a lot of individuals have done precisely that, as many have made idols of Celebrity and talents of every kind.
The book "Idols for Destruction" by James Burnham (?) immediately comes to mind, written at the height of the Cold War with the Marxist idols "Progress" and "History," as inevitable forces of nature were his main topic, though he did not leave out the particular idols of the West, especially of the State, comparable to Caesar after the suicide of the Roman Republic, when it became the Roman Empire.
But the short answer to your question is most definitely, but take care when you use the "we" qualifier. Include me out. The State, government, is not my god, nor is it in some pantheon of gods for me.
It's no longer enough to assume anyone just knows what you mean, any longer.
Assuming, however, that I do know what you mean, when you ask what I think was an honest question, you are close to hitting the nail right on the head, Amigo.
Best quick example, among countless others, is the whole debate about, so-called, "gay marriage." Why else would certain people be so strongly desiring the institution of marriage, as recognized in law, to specifically include their own perversions? They want validation, god-like validation, from the State.
Worse, they also totally confuse government for Society. The advanced state of Toleration is not enough for them, if they even understand what Toleration even is, which is unlikely.
Society, as most people define it, has no objective reality... how they picture it, that concept doesn't even exist.
What other examples can you think of where certain people have made a false deity of government.
(Though I write this way, I want to say your critical thinking and observation is excellent. Most people never get close to arriving where you've managed to go.)
YES, and the Problem is that Washington D.C. itself sees itself (or the peole in it who run it) see themslves a as a ‘god’ or ‘gods’ rather than turning to their Father and Creator who they don’t really acknowledge, nor their sin in humility and reverence like much of our Founding Fathers before them! God (praying), we need help-your ‘mercy’ and forgiveness for turning away from you both as persons and as a nation as a whole. Please forgive us, and grant us ‘mercy’..and a little more time..!
