Within minutes, six-year-old Rubjit Thindal went from happily chatting in the back seat of the car to collapsing and dying in her father's arms.
"If we had known it was so serious, we would have called 911,'' Kuldip Thindal, Rubjit's distraught mother, said in Punjabi yesterday. "She just had a stomach ache -- she wasn't even crying.''
Rubjit was pronounced dead at hospital barely 24 hours after showing signs of a fever. Later, doctors told her parents she had the H1N1 influenza virus. She is believed to be the youngest person in Canada with the virus to have died.

Is flu spread after fever has subside?
Last update: November 3, 2009 - 6:38 PM
People may be able to spread swine flu even after their symptoms have subsided, said new research reported in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. A study of Air Force cadets who came down with the flu this summer found that a significant proportion of them were still “shedding” virus more than 24 hours after their fever and other symptoms had disappeared.
Authorities have been asking people to stay home for at least a day after their fevers subside. While viable virus does not necessarily mean the illness can be transmitted, the findings raise questions about whether the current recommendations are sufficient, the researchers say. However, Anne Schuchat of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says she believes the current plan is sound.

Norway to offer Tamiflu over the counter
Norway is allowing over-the-counter sales of flu medicines Tamiflu and Relenza in response to the rapid spread of the H1N1 virus, reports AP. The policy goes into effect on Nov. 5, and will last until the middle of 2010.
On Nov. 3 the new appointed Health Minister, Anne-Grete Strøm-Erichsen (former Defence Minister), said: We are offering the drugs without prescription to make it easier for those who are sick to get the medicine, and to ease the work load for the doctors.
The medicine will be available at drug stores after consultation with a qualified pharmacist. A user fee of NOK 50 plus consultation fee of NOK 20 will be charged, reports the Norway Post
In addition, the health authorities have made available masks free of charge.

The National Institute of Public Health (RIVM) says that, for the first time in the Netherlands, the antiviral drug, Tamiflu, has had no effect on a patient infected with swine flu.
Most people infected with the A(H1N1) virus which causes the flu (known as Mexican flu in the Netherlands) show immediate improvement after receiving Tamiflu. The person concerned did not recover at all.
Worldwide, there have only been 39 cases of flu patients failing to show any improvement after taking the antiviral drug

Swine flu causes another death in New Jersey
The Associated Press
NEWARK, N.J. - Another New Jersey resident has died from swine flu.
State Health and Senior Services Commissioner Heather Howard says the 42-year-old Middlesex County man was hospitalized with underlying medical conditions. No other details were provided.
At least 20 people in the Garden State have died from the H1N1 virus. State officials confirmed last week that a 17-year-old student who attended Rancocas Valley High School in Burlington County had died.
Howard says about 775,000 vaccines have been shipped to New Jersey, more than half the 1.4 million that have been ordered.
The commissioner says swine flu has been confirmed in all 21 counties and that New Jersey is one of 48 states where the virus is considered to be widespread.

The state Health Department didn’t immediately release details on the cases on Wednesday.
Health officials say 15 people have died from the H1N1 flu and one from an unspecified flu-like illness since the H1N1 virus was first identified in Minnesota.
The Health Department’s weekly statistics show the number of H1N1 cases waning slightly last week.

Additional Information on the 17 Deaths in Virginia
Swine flu deaths increase to 17 across Virginia
http://www2.timesdispatch.com/rtd/business/health_med_fit/article/VFLU04_20091103-221004/303504/
Virginia deaths from H1N1 swine flu have risen to 17, according to the state Health Department, as the demand for flu vaccine continues to outpace supply in many places.
The most recent deaths include a female child from the Central Shenandoah Health District; two adult females, one from the Loudoun Health District in Northern Virginia and one from the Charlottesville-area Thomas Jefferson Health District; and an adult male from the Mount Rogers Health District in Southwest Virginia.
All had underlying health conditions except for the adult male, according to the Virginia Department of Health.
In all statewide, deaths blamed on swine flu include 11 females and six males. Three of the deaths have been of children. Fifteen of the 17 people who have died had underlying health conditions.
The H1N1 swine flu is an influenza strain not seen in humans until this year. Though it’s causing relatively mild illness for most who get it, health officials fear it could mutate and cause more severe illness.
Swine flu claims 10th victim in Kern County
By Jose Gaspar, Eyewitness News Video BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Kern County Public Health officials have confirmed the death of a 47-year-old Bakersfield woman is related to the H1N1 virus, also known as swine flu.
The woman was hospitalized at Mercy Hospital in downtown. She becomes the 10th person to die from swine flu in Kern County so far this year.
Meanwhile, the effort to vaccinate against swine flu continues. Around 1,200 doses were administered Tuesday at a vaccine clinic at North High School.
County health officials aren’t sure exactly when more vaccine will be arriving, only to say the next batch could come at any time.
Private providers are also starting to get the vaccine, and that is expected to reduce the long lines of people at county-run vaccine clinics.

I think it’s great you do foster work with cats and kittens :)
I’ve had 6 kittens and one Momma cat so far this year. Two are currently getting their ‘housebreaking’ certification and should be ready for adoption within a week.
Here’s a link to an interview tomorrow with Niman:
Ukraine Update tomorrow at noon EST
The info from Ukraine is very sketchy, for a variety of reasons. I hope that Niman has some info tomorrow. I find him a bit hard to listen to, prefer reading his commentaries, but to understand what’s going on with this pandemic really requires hours of study, learning terminology, and so on. PFI is a good place for background as well as new, and also NS1’s blog that I posted links to above somewhere (NS1’s is a bit harder, he has two sections and one is geared towards the layman, the other is highly techincal and waaaay beyond my brain).
My view fwiw (maybe not much!) is that swine flu has mutated enough to start causing more serious illness in more people, quicker contagion between people, and higher CFR. The official numbers are no doubt much higher, and it is quickly spreading into Romania and Belarus (at least).
I am sure it is not pneumonic plague, as they can see quickly in a microscope if it is that bacteria.
Niman is often - less than wordy - when he explains things. And the CDC and other entities are very scarce with sharing sequences so that many scientists could see waht the virus is up to. THe situation with knowledge sharing is very poor. Politics trumps the health of the citizens. Unfortunately.
NS1’s blog gives a very readable overview of what is happening now and what is likely to happen. I would highly recommend this article to anyone who wants to learn more.

Ya..I heard this on the radio earlier..they said that cat is fine now. I was gonna find an article and post it.
Why is this not all over the media? I’m very suprised frankly ...
