Thousands Head To Springfield To Fight Budget Cuts
State Lawmakers Must Plug Budget Hole Of More Than $9 Million
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (CBS) - Thousands of people boarded board buses and trains for Springfield to protest possible budget cuts at a special legislative session that starts Tuesday.
State lawmakers must plug a budget hole of more than $9 billion. Some organizers affected could see their funding cut in half, while others could see their state money eliminated altogether.
Gov. Pat Quinn wants to save the programs that help people by raising the state income tax.
But lawmakers are hesitant to go along with the plan. House Speaker Michael Madigan's House Democrats have blocked the tax hike, which was approved by the state Senate.
On Monday, a protest against the cuts was held at Madigan's district office. It was organized by the AFSCME union local representing some 700 adult education instructors at the City Colleges, who are dependent on state funding.
Also Monday, Quinn spoke to a group of several hundred who oppose the budget cuts, at a Humboldt Park rally. Several of supporters became so excited, they began jumping in time to their chants. He suddenly joined them.
"I believe in jumping for the common good. Some of these proposed budget cutbacks would result in 100,000 people losing their jobs," Quinn said Monday.
At this point, there is no sign of an agreement in Springfield that would avert these unprecedented state budget cuts. The governor's estimate of 100,000 layoffs indicates how broad the service cuts would be.
CBS 2 Political Editor Mike Flannery will have a ringside seat for the budget battle in Springfield. Look for his reports starting this afternoon on the CBS 2 News at 5PM.

Wow! Thousands of people all managed to get the day off of work today? Incredible!
If the truth be told, the story should read ... “Thousands of underemployed, unemployed, shiftless, hopelessly dependent on tax dollars, drones and community activist people boarded board buses and trains for Springfield to protest possible budget cuts ....”
Teachers Union. They sure can drum up a crowd when they need to keep the money flowing.
Fleeing to Springfield.
Now THAT’S funny.
They all want lower taxes and more government services.
“If the truth be told,...”
You could have saved time and just written “Obama supporters.”
They need a monorail!
I think it is the union of state, county, and municipal employees,
AFSCME = ACORN

Wow. This must be written at a grade level Chicgoans can understand.
But, TRUE.
ACORN socialists.
there is some really discouraging video footage out on the web about attempted budget cuts in Caleeforrniah. Several state legislators in a public meeting, outlining clearly with figures and graphs that “we have no more money”, only to be shouted down by stomping and shouting in the audience, carried out by people wearing red t-shirts bearing some union logo. Obviously they prevailed.

Probably the civil servant union ... I read earlier 246 former San Francisco employees receive pensions in excess of $100,000 a year. Fifteen are above $150,000. They are willing to fight to preserve their comfortable work free way of life.
We are getting close, huh?
I suggest all of us taxpaying, fee paying law abiding productive working folks figure out every single exemption and deduction we can possibly find (all legally of course) to insure that our governments at all levels find themselves in the same situation, and that we force them to decide to cut loose the dross. I am all for taking care of widows and orphans etc, but those of sound mind and body who will not work will not eat on my watch. Illegals (note the Illegal part of the word) will be tossed over a border (anyone will do, in my opinion) or repatriated to their origin if incarcerated here).
Stand firm and keep up the pressure!!!
God Bless America

PLEASE tell me there is video of this...
Humboldt Park: if you want to rally deadbeats and layabouts, no better neighborhood.
