A Tucson hospital's health-care package promises affluent Mexican women the chance to have their babies in posh surroundings with access to the latest medical equipment.
But the marketing materials leave out a key draw in the arrangement: U.S. citizenship for the newborn.
Tucson Medical Center's "birth package" gives an official nod to a generations-old practice of wealthy Mexican women coming to U.S. hospitals to give birth. Mexican families do the same thing at all local hospitals, but TMC is the only one actively recruiting their business.
The practice is legal, but offensive to some advocates of tougher U.S. immigration standards.

Border
They don’t have enought business so they need to advertise?
I didn’t know the Spaniard derived Mexican upper class did this.
Border bump
This is just wrong. Not only are we allowing the lifeboat to be overloaded, we're allowing some of those already in the boat to punch holes in the bottom.
This is why we need to take care of this anchor baby crap! If your mother and/or father are not U.S. citizens, you aren’t either. Saying someone is an American citizen when their parent sneaks across the border to have the baby is just a dumbass idea.
This is a scam known in all overseas countries, didn’t you know about it?
Japanese actresses brag about using it on TV in Tokyo;
... all rich Mexicans use it.
Heck, even poor tourists use it by just staying a little bit longer, or inducing labor (not big labor) early.
As far as I can tell, the U.S.A. is the only country out of 220 world-wide countries to allow this loophole, and has so for more than 200 years.
And of course once little Joey is a new American he can invite Mom, Grand-mom, and all his cousins to become Americans too. Why do you think LA is inhabited by people who will laughingly tell you to your face that soon LA will be owned by others? Ask a few and see what answers you get ...
No politician is willing to talk about it, change it, or even inform you of it. But believe me, all non-U.S, citizens know it very well indeed.
One only need to look at California to see what is destroying every state in this union.
The anchor baby thing is less than a century old.
Hawaii has been doing this since 1961.
“but TMC is the only one actively recruiting their business.”
The author doesn’t know what she is talking about. It destroys her credibility in the whole article. At least since the 60s I’ve seen articles ... and employment ads... for hospitals that hire a person specifically to attract rich pregnancies from other countries. It’s not just Mexico. It’s the world. And its been going on a long time.
That's my take on how it should be.
How about W's Mexican pages on whitehouse.gov, from which I saved this titlebar:
Even the 'W the Good' was clueless about sovereignty and had lots of Mexican lingo on his website!
Los Estados Unidos, indeed!!
Thanks for the ping.

Apparently not: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jus_soli#Specific_national_legislation . Birth tourists come to this country, too. Personally, I’m kind of envious of those who have dual citizenship - nice to have two countries from which you cannot legally be denied entry. Could definitely come in handy.
I thought the US didn’t allow dual citizenship, so I was surprised to hear that obama has it (I think he does, right?). Looks like that was the case until 1967 or 1980 court cases that struck it down. I bet if we still had that ban in place we would have fewer of these birthright citizenship cases.
I lived in south Texas in the 80s and it was common for women to come across the border, give birth, and then go back (or not). I know it’s only gotten much worse since then. I never liked the idea of our country being used in that way. Like everyone says, come in legally - don’t break our laws. Why is that so hard for the government to understand?
