Exerpt... To the people of Iran: You are rich in culture and talent. You have a right to live under a government that listens to your wishes, respects your talents, and allows you to build better lives for your families. Unfortunately, your government denies you these opportunities, and threatens the peace and stability of your neighbors. So we call on the regime in Tehran to heed your will, and to make itself accountable to you. The day will come when the people of Iran have a government that embraces liberty and justice, and Iran joins the community of free nations. And when that good day comes, you will have no better friend than the United States of America. President George W. Bush, January 13, 2008.

George Bush's legacy and fight endures in the Mid East, despite, and in spite of Obama, and THAT is Obama's real dielma. It was George Bush's policy of engagement and support of liberty that has led to the people of Iran seeing the measure of freedom now established on both sides of them in Iraq and Afghjanistan...and desiring it for themselves.
Obama cannot possibly go too far in recognizing that, or he absolutely repudiates himself and his entire foreign policy.
...but their fight in Iran is far from over, and is getting brutal.

Couldn’t agree more.
Too bad we don’t have a leader.
Wow now there is some clarity not this murky we are on both the side of the mullahs and we don’t want violence so we are not meddling and we are keeping our mouths shut.
‘Too bad we don’t have a leader who will say right now in such a manner.’
Nobama makes Bush look like a genius. W will be so vindicated in 4 years, it won’t even be funny...
Oh my. I sure miss GW!! He loves his country and loves freedom!! He said some things, the most important of things, very very well!
Take a lesson, BO!!!
would you believe Licorice Jello
Thanks for all you are doing in bringing out the truth.
Makes me want to sit here and cry. I didn’t agree with Pres Bush on some issues but when it came to his love for this Country and freedom, he was right at the top. He would have been out front immediately supporting the Iranian Patriots. Iran was our ally until Carter came along.
Now we have a Chicago Muslim who hates America thanks to voter fraud and the drive-bys covering for him. I didn’t like Clinton but I liked him a lot better then ZERO, the wimp.
Thank you for posting the words of a genuine leader!
Like many of us, Charles Krauthammer thought it would take many years for the world to truly appreciate the presidency of George W Bush. He recently changed his mind and now believes that the actions of Obama are vindicating President Bush on a daily basis. I couldn’t agree more!
[It’s unfortunate for the Iranians and Israelis (and the rest of the world) that George W Bush is no longer president!]
It won’t take four years for vindication for Pres Bush — it is happening on a daily basis.
ZERO doesn’t have a clue what it takes to be President but he sure knows how to be in the office 9-5 and take off weekends no matter what is happening.
And to that Obama says, “present”.
Oh darn. I like Licorice and I like Jello.... I think I would love to find something like that.
I understood what you meant, but it still woke up my sweet tooth. ;>)
I think the Iranian people have a pretty clear idea at this point as to which US president supported them and which doesn’t. And that breaks my heart to know that at this deadly critical moment when Iranian citizens are dying in defense of liberty, the American president who ‘got it’ is no longer in a position to officially come to their aid, and the one who is is making tepid statements of support, and the ‘fourth estate’; our media, are more consumed with his outing for ice cream today and his dog’s official photo.
As the mirror to Michelle Obama who was only first proud of her country only when her husband was nominated to be president, I am ashamed of and apologize for my government’s mishandling of this quest by the brave people of Iran for their freedom.
Wow, Jeff! I literally was getting ready to post a vanity mentioning how obvious it was where to give credit for inspiring the the groundswell in Iran (and more importantly the continuation in the face of first the threat and now the realkity of state violence) - George Bush and the idea of trickle-down freedom (my phrase.)
While the reasons are unquestionably numerous the fact is Bush - and many of us - understood that when stories of freedom in all of it's forms trickled over to Iran, Lebanon, Syria, etc. an underground desire for basic freedoms would start percolating.
There are no guarantees and needless to say the idea of progress will surely look to us as repression-lite but it will be the sprouting of a flower of freedom that surely will be better for those affected and the world in general than what it replaced.
thanks for keeping us updated, Jeff.
