THE WHITE HOUSE
Office of the Press Secretary _______________________________________________________________ For Immediate Release June 20, 2009
Statement from the President on Iran
The Iranian government must understand that the world is watching. We mourn each and every innocent life that is lost. We call on the Iranian government to stop all violent and unjust actions against its own people. The universal rights to assembly and free speech must be respected, and the United States stands with all who seek to exercise those rights.
As I said in Cairo, suppressing ideas never succeeds in making them go away. The Iranian people will ultimately judge the actions of their own government. If the Iranian government seeks the respect of the international community, it must respect the dignity of its own people and govern through consent, not coercion.
Martin Luther King once said - "The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice." I believe that. The international community believes that. And right now, we are bearing witness to the Iranian peoples belief in that truth, and we will continue to bear witness.
If he really believed in this statement, he would be before cameras saying it.
One thing we know about him that he loves to hear himself talk and loves the camera.
This statement is political BS. It is not going to take the heat off of him. He's too late.
What a long winded pile of BS.
I’d like to see the Translation on this one in Farsi....
“President Obama is STUPID”
Reagan’s “Tear down this Wall” was more direct and understandable.
I know this is going to come as a massive blow to Obama, but I doubt the people of Iran idolize MLK to the degree he thinks they do.
That is the point, one of the reasons this is happening is because we went into Iraq, established a Democracy and WE ARE GOING HOME. While I don’t believe we will completely pull out (we are still in Germany and Japan after all) We are and will turn the country and its resources back to the people. This is not lost on the citizens of Iran and speaks volumes.
Freedom is rising in the Middle East because of W and the US Military, which remains one of the greatest forces for good in the world. As this plays out, US policy for the last 8 years will look better than ever and the foolishness of the last six months will bring discredit to O and his supporters. God still has a sense of humor.
“As I said in Cairo,”
It’s about ME!
We were to have a debate! With ME!
I am the world! ME! and my liberal gang that think our thoughts equal “the world!”
Meaning: We'll just watch. This is not giving testimony or providing evidence for anything. He's twisting the language.
Well, ok. If he just reiterates this statement on TV, I doubt it will change opinions considering the images we are now seeing out of Iran. He's a day late and a dollar short.
Damage control statement.
I don't see how this is going to quell any criticism against his week-long silence. In fact, it might exasperate it.
You are right. Obama doesn’t get it. Iraqi’s have freedom because of the former president, and Iran wants it too!
I can’t see a scenario where the U.S. would enter Iran and fix things. For that reason I believe our support for the Iranians (from the top) must remain somewhat muted.
The last thing I want to see, is the Iranian people put their lives on the line thinking the U.S. will swoop in and rescue them. If they were given hope, and that didn’t happen, it would be a betrayal of sorts.
Trying to shame the government of Iran into submission may be the right thing to do here.
I’m willing to listen to folks who may have a better idea. Our people are certainly making it clear that they support the Iranian populace.
I guess Obama and the international community could talk about sanctions. We’ve seen what good that does. And who would that hurt in the end anyway..., the people we support.
I’m not sure what alternatives we really do have right now.
resident not president
Weak
Freedom in Iraq. Freedom in Afghanistan. And now The Kenyan and his handlers are livid at the idea of freedom for Iran.
“Present!”
“Altogether an odd speech.”
He is speaking from egotism, and liberal arrogance.
They believe they have a handle on what “the world” thinks,
what that is really is a projection of their hubris and heritage.
Obviously the “world” is not against A-jad, he had a meeting with Russia in days of the election, for one.
So Obama....does that mean the July 4th celebrations for the Iranian regime thugs is off?

Too little too late pantywaist!
Pharaoh has spoken. You protesters are but silly little flies. Begone! I am bored!
If the Iranian revolution succeeds, it will be despite Obama, not because of him. If it succeeds, of course, he will take full credit.
Gee only a week late! *sarcasm*
