Hundreds Line Up For Free Digital Converter Boxes (The Katrina of television)
WLWT Cincinnati ^ | June 12, 2009 | WLWT

Posted on 06/12/2009 7:10:03 AM PDT by TSgt

CINCINNATI -- Hundreds lined up Friday morning for free digital converter boxes.

The Freestore Foodbank announced Thursday that it would offer 250 free converter boxes at its office in Over-the-Rhine Friday morning at 8 a.m.

By 5 a.m., more than 300 people had lined up. By 8 a.m., that number had swelled to more than 600.

Because of the large turnout, not everyone in line would be receiving a free digital converter box.

A digital converter box is needed by anyone who does not have cable, satellite television or a digital antenna.

The government has offered coupons to help people cover the cost of digital converter boxes, which can be purchased at most electronics stores.

As Willie Cunningham (700-WLW) put it, "Digital television is here, will the stupid riot in the streets."

Note those standing in line for a free converter.

This is the Katrina of television.

But since welfare already furnishes them with cable, you can expect to see these being sold on fleabay within the next few days.

When they find out they still need an antenna they will riot.

Many of the rabbit ears that people use now will not be up to the job for digital.

What they don’t tell you is that most of those older TV’s need at least another cable and some kind of converter box in order to run them. (I’ve had two calls yesterday from older neighbors with old sets that aren’t compatible and have had to purchase additional equipment in order for the FREE STUFF to work).

Wait till htese crowds get them home and find out they can’t watch them.... Hoo boy.

Yup, that's true. Fund plans for a fractal antenna that shows promise in initial tests. Will test further today.

Probably most of them have cable and don't realize they don't need a converter.

"But the TV station said we would need one!"

Kinda like in the Marines when the new guy is told to go ask the Motor Pool Gunny for the keys to the tank.

And this is why the switchover was delayed.

Exactly! Like the 75-300 Ohm twin-lead transformer...

"As Willie Cunningham (700-WLW) put it, "Digital television is here, will the stupid riot in the streets."

I've been saying this since they switched the date from February. At least then it would have been cold and kept people in.

Today it's cloudy and rainy in Cincinnati, but if it gets hot this weekend we'll probably see some rioting over this. Maybe on a small scale, maybe like the riots we had in 2001. Who knows.

If it starts up again, so be it. I got my ccw a couple months ago, so I'm covered outside, and I have trusty Mr. 12 gauge if them rioting thugs want to come in here.

Cool. Thank you for that. I’m going to print it for them so they understand what they need.

Probably most of them have cable and don't realize they don't need a converter.

Probably most of them heard "free" and "TV" and showed up to get whatever they could get their hands on, regardless of need.
