Obama move would eliminate 8 of 10 pocketknives(time to email reps)

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency is proposing a new definition that could be used to eliminate 8 of 10 legal pocketknives in the United States right now, according to activists who are gearing up to fight the plan.

The federal bureaucracy is accepting comments – written only – that must be received by June 21 before its planned changes could become final, but Doug Ritter of KnifeRights.org, said the implications of the decision would be far-reaching, since many state and federal agencies depend on the agency's definitions to determine what is legal in the United States.

For a long time, those switchblades that have long stiletto blades that are spring-ejected powerfully from the side or end of the handle have been illegal in the United States, but now a review by the agency of its own approval in 2008 of a particular type of knife for import is raising serious alarms.

Ritter said the effect of the proposed change would be that the new design in knives, many of which contain a tiny spring to help the user pull open the blade and lock it into position, would be classified alongside those true weapons where the user just presses a button and the blade is ejected.

How’s a pocket knife dangerous? The spring’s not strong enough to classify as a switch blade, and besides, if you were stupid enough to try to use the spring to flip the blade out you’d better move REALLY fast, because you’d be presenting the BACK, or DULL SIDE of the blade.

I would have thought (as a foreigner) that your “Right to Keep and Bear Arms” would also include bladed arms such as knives and swords,

and you would be correct. The 2A fight has centered so long on firearms that it's a bit of a mental jolt to apply it to knives. To us, knives aren't so much weapons as they are articles of clothing.

CORRECT! It also included CANNONS, which were common on private ships, and at the estates of the wealthy.

" To us, knives aren't so much weapons as they are articles of clothing."

Not to mention a handy, all purpose tool.

In a sense, clothing is also a handy, all purpose tool.

After 9/11. American airlines prohibited knives and served plastic knives with regular forks & spoons. That was so whacked I can’t tell you.

Restaurants in Houston airport (IAH) still do that. But in 1st class on the plane I get metal knives.

Yes. The ban on switchblades was caused by the same type of hysteria that cause “silencers” (firearm mufflers) to be banned in 1934.

FYI, there is no NEED for the Supremes to consider 2nd Amendment “Incorporation”! FACT: The 2nd Amendment is SELF-incorporated to all government entities at every level. It is MORE ABSOLUTE than the 1st Amendment, or any of the others, because the wording forbids not only CONGRESS, but ANYONE from infringing on it. The 1st says “Congress shall make no law...”. The 2nd say “shall NOT be infringed!” Period! End of debate!

Random thought... can we get the Boy Scouts involved in this on our side? I imagine they wouldn’t like the 0 banning their ability to use swiss army knives either... and they have deep pockets that might help with the cause

Boyscouts involved?

Maybe, go ahead and email them. This is a serious assault on freedom and common sense. I’ve emailed my senators, rep. fox hannity boortz levin beck limbaugh drudge and posted here. Anybody emailed anybody else?

>If I had the bucks, I would own a 50BMG. It will have to wait for now.

Hm, there’s talk about the “ammo bubble” bursting. If that’s so, then perhaps firearms, in general, will come down a bit too. So, it may actually be to your benefit to wait.

Still would like to own one. Thought I wanted a Barrett, but there are several options that deliver incredible accuracy.

Pray that this stuff is never needed, but no human can predict how this plays out.

Whatever Washington does, Texas will never be subjected, not as long as some of the natives breath.

How about just executing every criminal who commits a violent crime. I’m tired of having my freedoms taken away one by one.

You should consider a run for public office, I’d vote for you! This is a freedom issue.

OMGoodness. What a horror. Glad you survived and are are here with us. I won't make a joke out of your ordeal, it must still be frightening to you. I hope you are okay now. Was the perp arrested and punished?

But your point is well-taken. Unfortunately, just as with guns, knives don't kill people, people holding knives kill and mame people. And no law removing the knives is going to change the messed-up mind of a hate-filled attacking psychopath. As long as criminals continue to get away with violence they will find weapons of one sort or another, and violence will always be with us.

This happened in ‘04. I’m quite fine, thank you. The perp, unbeknownst to me, had a medical condition and chose to “self-medicate”. He thought he was getting better and decided to stop taking his medication.

Similar to the Asian student at VT, he was having a paranoid delusion. He’s at the funny farm now, 4 years going.

On a side not, my wife got pregnant March ‘06, and I’m the proud papa of twins!

My son is the “future center of the Pittsburgh Steelers”, and my daughter is the “future Danica Patrick”! LOL!
