Obama move would eliminate 8 of 10 pocketknives(time to email reps)

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency is proposing a new definition that could be used to eliminate 8 of 10 legal pocketknives in the United States right now, according to activists who are gearing up to fight the plan.

The federal bureaucracy is accepting comments – written only – that must be received by June 21 before its planned changes could become final, but Doug Ritter of KnifeRights.org, said the implications of the decision would be far-reaching, since many state and federal agencies depend on the agency's definitions to determine what is legal in the United States.

For a long time, those switchblades that have long stiletto blades that are spring-ejected powerfully from the side or end of the handle have been illegal in the United States, but now a review by the agency of its own approval in 2008 of a particular type of knife for import is raising serious alarms.

Ritter said the effect of the proposed change would be that the new design in knives, many of which contain a tiny spring to help the user pull open the blade and lock it into position, would be classified alongside those true weapons where the user just presses a button and the blade is ejected.

We need to fight this like a 2nd ammendment issue. Forward this to all your friends. Email your reps. Now. Customs just rejected a comment extension. All comments must be in by June 21. Remember the once fired brass ban?

After 9/11. American airlines prohibited knives and served plastic knives with regular forks & spoons. That was so whacked I can’t tell you.

I would have thought (as a foreigner) that your “Right to Keep and Bear Arms” would also include bladed arms such as knives and swords, and blunt arms such as cudgels and batons. Why would it be restricted to firearms?

In which case, it IS a second-amendment issue.

I don’t think so. I think they are doing this to make us look silly. It is important to distinguish between the two. We need to continue to fight any 2nd amendment attacks as it is in the constitution, but knives? Really?

That’s interesting. Why does your second amendment only apply to firearms, and not other forms of weaponry? That is counter-intuitive.

CAN SOMEONE EXPLAIN TO ME WHY EXACTLY A TRADITIONAL SWITCHBLADE KNIFE IS ILLEGAL?

never mind this more recent lunacy of trying to outlaw even more spring type knives. Why is it legal to own and carry a concealed high cap pistol yet illegal to carry a classic italian-sytle stilletto switchblade knife?!?!

I guess there’s gonna be a run on knives now. Is obama trying for “knife salesman of the year” as well? What’s next? motorcycle salesman of the year?

Out of all the problems facing the country right now, they can’t find anything better to do. Will they ban bow and arrows, rocks and sticks next?

When the laws don’t make sense, people will ignore them.

“I guess I should start stocking up on knives”

You should help spread the word and contact reps. If this law passes, just transporting a pocket knife across state lines will be a felony. I wish this were a joke...
