Mark Steyn: Obama's message of weakness
OC Register ^ | 6/5/09 | Mark Steyn

As recently as last summer, General Motors filing for bankruptcy would have been the biggest news story of the week. But it's not such a very great step from the unthinkable to the inevitable, and by the time it actually happened the market barely noticed, and the media were focused on the president's "address to the Muslim world." As it happens, these two stories are the same story: snapshots, at home and abroad, of the hyperpower in eclipse. It's a long time since anyone touted GM as the emblematic brand of America – What's good for GM is good for America, etc. In fact, it's more emblematic than ever: Like General Motors, the U.S. government spends more than it makes, and has airily committed itself to ever more unsustainable levels of benefits. GM has about 95,000 workers but provides health benefits to a million people: It's not a business enterprise, but a vast welfare plan with a tiny loss-making commercial sector. As GM goes, so goes America?

But who cares? Overseas, the coolest president in history was giving a speech. Or, as the official press release headlined it on the State Department Web site, "President Obama Speaks To The Muslim World From Cairo."

Excellent observation, excellent point. “Christian World” is a shibboleth: only true believers can say it and utter it without spitting on their neighbors.

One of the very best.

It's amazing that Steyn can do what he does, time and time again, day in and day out.

But you're right: Steyn nails this one even more than usual.

Will this guy ever shut up?

I hope not. The more Obama speaks, the quicker folks figure out that there's no there there.

"That sound you heard in Cairo is the tingy ping of a hollow superpower." Steyn is right on the money, as always. Indeed, it's taken the democrats only a few months to carve out the infrastructure of this once-great nation.

Of course, their brainpower will cow me, so I’ll just be serving the meal and the drinks and the cigars (Annie, too!) and listening in...But dang, that would be a fun, fun, fun evening! :)

I am coming over and we can squeeze Stein’s chair in.

What I find most disturbing is that the MSM have done their best to spike the murder of a U.S. soldier by a Muslim extremist on U.S. soil,

What a pitiful CIC; exactly the opposite of GWB. Pres. Bush treated the members of our armed services respect in every way.

How are you at preparing Banana’s Foster? You can be our Dessert Chef, but you’ll have to double the recipe. ;)

All are welcome at THIS Round Table as long as they contribute in some manner to the betterment of our Nation.

Banana’s Foster

¼ cup butter
1 cup packed brown sugar
½ teaspoon cinnamon
½ cup dark rum, divided
4 bananas, cut in half lengthwise, then halved
4 (1/4-cup) scoops vanilla ice cream

Combine butter, brown sugar and cinnamon in a flambé pan or skillet. Place over low heat and cook, stirring, until sugar dissolves. Stir in ¼ cup rum, then place bananas in the pan. When banana sections soften and begin to brown, carefully add remaining rum. Continue to cook until rum is hot, then ignite.

When the flames subside, (LOL!) lift bananas out of pan and place four pieces over each scoop of ice cream. Spoon warm sauce over top and serve immediately.

Serves 4.

he congratulated Muslims on inventing algebra

You've got to be kidding, he really did that? Did he remember to say it was the very last achievement?

Actually, I believe it was the Babylonians who invented algebra -- about 1200 years before Mohammed.

Steyn simply runs circles around other columnists. That’s because unlike 98.44% of them, he actually knows what he’s talking about.
