It is sad when a male who appears to have a handgun is seen as a public danger. I am a male who has a handgun and I will protect those around me.

Just got a message from my child’s school. Man with gun in custody, school still on modified lockdown. Why?

No gunman, huh? And still my kid’s principal was told he was in custody.

Which is what we heard about the cardboard bank robber - suspect in custody.

Both can be true. All you need is somebody who thought they saw a gun, but didn't; police stop the guy, and find that there's nothing amiss.

Apparently the man was under the delusional that the 2nd amendment applies on college campuses.

Man with plastic toy gun. This is what happens when the current generation is raised on idiotic zero tolerance policies. I hope too many libs didn’t pee their pants on this one.

Are you asking why the school is still in lockdown?

After VA Tech, wouldn’t you want the school to complete a thorough investigation, make sure the perp was acting alone, didn’t leave any bombs or other threats, etc?

I work at a college and have two children attending colleges. That’s what the emergency text notification system is about.

I’m not quite sure what you are questioning, but I’d rather be safe than sorry.

I also don’t see the need to immediately release a school’s emergency text msg to the public while it is still an emergent situation. Just what you need, parents, busybodies and the press calling or coming when the institution is still at the point of assessing the situation and trying to make sure everyone is safe.

It would certainly raise my eyebrows and make me question why someone not in uniform is walking around with a handgun in plain sight.

Plainclothes security guards, off duty peace officers, business owners, whoever, may be carrying, but if the gun becomes visible, common sense dictates to me to be on the alert and quickly scan for exits.

As far as I’m concerned, FR IS an emergency notification system. The thread was posted minutes before the phone call, although I got the phone call first. I didn’t give the name of the school; I implied that things seemed to be under control; ie modified lockdown and suspect in custody. How is that going to encourage a rash of phone calls? The principal also said in the phone message, don’t worry, don’t come in, so parents would know.

One aspect of the emergency text notification system is that people will notify others who haven’t seen the texts yet.

I can’t speak for public institutions, but would private institutions be well within their rights to have a “check your weapon at the door” policy?

I wouldn’t feel my rights were violated on private property and even certain public places (aircraft, jails, places where alcohol is consumed and behavior is typically bad, etc.)

I didn’t mean to imply that you posted the alert.

But I disagree that FR is an “emergency notification system”. It is an open forum. Speculation and rumor always fly freely here and rightly so.

Its just that in this era of instant communication, things get out of control quickly and I think that some restraint should be used in emergent situations.

The institution’s first responsibility is student/public safety, not answering the press and the curious. This just makes it harder. IMHO.

Drudge: 4 kids rummaging in a Dumpster (departing students dump good stuff) found a green plastic gun, tucked in waistband, woman saw and called police.

What I don’t understand is why they are in custody for having a plastic gun? Is dumpster diving an offense in Nuevo Jersey?

The truth is that someone plotting a robbery or other evil will probably not have a handgun in plain sight. Someone carrying openly is not up to no good. I realize that it may make some people concerned though. I usually carry concealed, though some of my friends are big proponents of open carry. I’m sure that carrying openly will invite a lot of scrutiny and probably hassles from uneasy people. But the criminals, they have their guns in their pockets or waistbands if they have one at all.

Green plastic toy gun. Sounds like a water pistol. Pretty scary for someone who was never allowed to see a picture of a gun. Apparently not all at Princeton are getting a proper education.
