A candlelight vigil has been scheduled for 8 p.m. today at Old Town Square to show support for George Tiller's family and to oppose violence.
Dustin Deckard, 20, organized the vigil and is hoping it will be "a quiet show of support for Dr. Tiller and a moment to remember his medical and political triumphs."
Deckard, who supports abortion rights, called today's shooting of Tiller "akin to the murder of Harvey Milk," an openly gay California politician who was shot to death in 1978.
"With the situation today, I think that what side people are on is the last thing we should be arguing about," Deckard said. "The death of people's loved one is more important today than any political alignment."
Deckard is spreading word of tonight's vigil through Twitter, a microblog service, and other social networking tools. Questions about the vigil should be directed to dustindeckard@gmail.com.
Old Town Square is at Second and Mead streets.
Another pic of Dustin Deckard, the "man" orgainizing the "vigil"
Refuse to be associated and defined.
I am a Catholic who supports the pro-life actions of the Church.
I am conflicted.
I have for years considered that Abortion is murder, and yet I have not acted in a manner consistent with that belief. If I truly believed it, I would spend every waking moment standing in front of abortion clinics and laying my life down to protect the unborn.
Obviously in my heart of hearts, I don't consider it murder. Neither do most people who call it murder. We must be deluding ourselves. It's something bad, but it can't be murder. We simply don't act as if it is.
It goes on all around us and we go to work and go golfing and we go to movies and when some whack job takes an action to actually stop it, to actually act as if Abortion were REALLY murder, we get all huffy and call his act "heinous" and condemn him for taking the law into his own hands, etc.
Well all of us who called Tiller a murderer, but were unwilling to do all that we could to stop him are culpable in some way for molding the mind of the man who actually did.
Words have meaning and words have consequences.
Good deal. You defined yourself. It never has to include that psycho Phelps or the minions of The One.
I'm 60 so I've been around long ehough to see America transform from a Great Nation,
One that I was proud of.
To a nation I'm ashamed of.
Most Americans today have more in common with the communist rabble of the Russian Revolution,
than the rugged individualists who forged this nation.
We haven't lost the Republic, we've allowed it to slip away one small defeat at a time.
Until most young people don't even know the difference between a Republic and a Democracy.
Franklin questioned whether we could keep it, and now we know.
That is a monumental load of BS.
“I have for years considered that Abortion is murder, and yet I have not acted in a manner consistent with that belief. If I truly believed it, I would spend every waking moment standing in front of abortion clinics and laying my life down to protect the unborn.”
I think the mistake you are making here is in thinking there is only one way to oppose abortion. You do not have to stand in front of an abortion clinic to lay out your objection and defense of the unborn. So you stand in front of one clinic and the clinic across town keeps on running as if your protest was never happening. The fact that it is legal, precludes you from defending the unborn in any number of ways.
You can support life by supporting churches and organizations who are able to pool resources to campaign against abortion in a way that one person cannot. You can support life by refusing to accept politicians who are pro-choice as viable candidates worthy of your vote. You can support life by talking to your friends and family and influencing the way they think about abortion.
Don’t think because you do not respond in the most extreme way, that your voice doesn’t matter. It does.
So the "victim" was serving as a church usher at the time he was victimized, you say? Evil masquerades as goodness and fair justice.
He is not an abomination, his behavior is. These people don’t have a clue, nor do they want to get one.
I am glad about all that even though I wish Tiller's demise had come another way.
In a way, Tiller is responsible for his own demise in part. Murder of innocent lives, even if sanctioned/condoned by the government, is still murder. Man's law does not trump God's laws.
If my logic is faulty, why did the allies try, convict and execute so many Nazi's after WW II?
Dang, out of candles again.
IN MEMORY OF MOTHER TERESA
http://www.gargaro.com/mother_teresa/quotes.html
“America needs no words from me to see how your decision in Roe v. Wade has deformed a great nation. The so-called right to abortion has pitted mothers against their children and women against men. It has sown violence and discord at the heart of the most intimate human relationships.
It has aggravated the derogation of the father’s role in an increasingly fatherless society. It has portrayed the greatest of gifts — a child — as a competitor, an intrusion, and an inconvenience.
It has nominally accorded mothers unfettered dominion over the independent lives of their physically dependent sons and daughters
And, in granting this unconscionable power, it has exposed many women to unjust and selfish demands from their husbands or other sexual partners.
Human rights are not a privilege conferred by government.
They are every human being’s entitlement by virtue of his humanity. The right to life does not depend, and must not be declared to be contingent, on the pleasure of anyone else, not even a parent or a sovereign.” (Mother Theresa — “Notable and Quotable,” Wall Street Journal, 2/25/94, p. A14)
“But I feel that the greatest destroyer of peace today is abortion, because it is a war against the child - a direct killing of the innocent child - murder by the mother herself. And if we accept that a mother can kill even her own child, how can we tell other people not to kill one another?
How do we persuade a woman not to have an abortion? As always, we must persuade her with love, and we remind ourselves that love means to be willing to give until it hurts. Jesus gave even his life to love us. So the mother who is thinking of abortion, should be helped to love - that is, to give until it hurts her plans, or her free time, to respect the life of her child.
The father of that child, whoever he is, must also give until it hurts. By abortion, the mother does not learn to love, but kills even her own child to solve her problems. And by abortion, the father is told that he does not have to take any responsibility at all for the child he has brought into the world. That father is likely to put other women into the same trouble. So abortion just leads to more abortion.
Any country that accepts abortion is not teaching the people to love, but to use any violence to get what they want. That is why the greatest destroyer of love and peace is abortion. “
“Please don’t kill the child. I want the child. Please give me the child. I am willing to accept any child who would be aborted, and to give that child to a married couple who will love the child, and be loved by the child. From our children’s home in Calcutta alone, we have saved over 3,000 children from abortions. These children have brought such love and joy to their adopting parents, and have grown up so full of love and joy!”
February 1997 - National Prayer Breakfast in Washington attended by the President and the First Lady. “What is taking place in America,” she said, “is a war against the child. And if we accept that the mother can kill her own child, how can we tell other people not to kill one another.”
“Any country that accepts abortion, is not teaching its people to love, but to use any violence to get what it wants.” “It is a poverty to decide that a child must die so that you may live as you wish.”
” Dontcha think his supporters would be a little more than nervous to attend this type of event? “
Not really; though they will play up that angle as much as possible in order to damage the cause of Life for those who cannot speak for themselves. They will run around the country waving this bloody flag, and using it to shut up anyone who agrees with us. No, the baby-killers were given a very, very powerful weapon yesterday, and they will use it. We really have our work cut out for us, and it’s a shame, because the debate on rational and humane ground is ours to carry. We can win this argument, and we win people over every day, who, like me, turn around and say, “What the hell was I thinking? I guess I wasn’t thinking at all.” Now we’ve been thrown in with assassins, desperadoes, and lunatics.
Again.
We have some in here calling the pscho nutjob murderer with no life a hero....many applaud him...we have new sign in’s praising the extremist vigliante. It would not surprise me if he was.
You sound like Michelle o. :)
One of my sons is also adopted. He is currently in his rebellious stage and has loudly opposed all my values except one - he is pro life. I still remember the day when we had the news on and there was a story about abortion — he turned to me with wide eyes and said “mom, that could have been me”
That moment has apparently stayed with him as well. I think this is the issue God will use to bring him out of his rebellion and back in the fold.
Bless you and your son!
I don’t know much about my kids’ birth mothers (adopted from Russia) and they are going through the stage of questioning why they were given up, and rejected-
but the abortion discussion gave us a chance to talk about the miracle that they were born at all - a powerful type of love and acceptance by their birth mothers, even if they could not keep and raise them
