Under intense fire from the right, former secretary of state Colin L. Powell is preparing to answer his Republican critics this weekend in a television appearance that is likely to add fuel to his long-standing feud with top conservatives in his party.
The appearance will come just days after Powell, one of the country's leading black political figures, told an audience in Boston that a new Republican Party is "waiting to emerge." Earlier this month, he said the party is in "deep trouble" because "Americans are looking for more government in their life, not less."
Conservatives denounced his 1996 GOP convention speech, in which he voiced his support for abortion rights and affirmative action. But he quickly dropped off the political radar and did not resurface until presidential candidate George W. Bush sought him out as a popular figure whose public following and foreign policy expertise would benefit the Republican ticket.
At the White House, advisers say that the president and Powell have a good relationship and that Obama reached out to the former general during the campaign for advice and counsel on a variety of national security issues.
And on Capitol Hill, some Republican lawmakers -- fearful of driving away one of the country's most popular and charismatic figures -- say they are eager to keep Powell in their party despite the policy differences many have with him.

"A new Republican Party is "waiting to emerge."
Let's call it the "Powell Movement" for short...
He voted for a pro-infanticide socialist. Pretty sure he’s in the wrong party.
LOL. Powell endorsed and voted for Obama over moderate/maverick McCain. Funny, but I haven't heard the Dems saying they want to keep Zell Miller in the party.
Powell has long since destroyed whatever credibility he had with me. He should switch parties and serve within the Obama White House. My take on it is Obama wouldn’t have him there. He’s serving in the only capacity he is useful for right now, well within the confines of the Republican party.
Power is another person who needs to be drop-kicked out of the Republican Party, immediately.
>>Let’s call it the “Powell Movement” for short...
Or what he meant: the democratic party.
1) Hillary will be nominated to the SCOTUS/
2) Powell will replace her as Sec. of State.
Yes I’ve always wanted more government in my life. It is so efficient and organized. NOT!
He was the dope who stopped the first Iraq war when we could have finished the whole mess off. He was the dope who delayed the second Iraq war for six weeks allowing the other side to dispose of its WMD's IMO.
Powell shouldn't have any say in things Republican or conservative going forward. Period.
“1) Hillary will be nominated to the SCOTUS/”
“2) Powell will replace her as Sec. of State.”
What a horrible thought!
If Powell is a leader, who is following? A few moderate Republicans, most of whom voted for Obama or stayed home. A movement does not that make. He is trying to pull a Perot, splitting off enough dupes to give 0 a chance in the next election, but Powell can’t do it, not even with the 0media’s help. If strong, intelligent conservatives start emerging, Powell will be nothing more than an irritating stooge for the left. It will take a lot more than him to salvage 0’s failed presidency.
I haven’t liked powell since the Gulf War. Cheney was doing all of the decision making and calling the shots, leading to victory - powell would step into the spotlight only when the applause started. He’s a fake...a commiebama operative.
That may have been what 52% of them (including the fraudulent ACORN votes) said last November, but ObaMao didn't exactly campaign on the slogan of growing government, increasing the deficit and bailing out the auto companies. In fact, one of his key talking points was that McCain was more socialist because he voted for the bank bailout whereas ObaMao abstained. McCain was also going to tax health care benefits. McCain was like a third term for George Bush because he favored using our taxes to benefit favored business interests.
And McCain was a RINO who wouldn't and couldn't deny a lot of these charges.
But even if Powell's charges were true, why do we need a socialist lite party in opposition when we already have a national socialist party in power?
Powell is a joke. He sold his character to the leftist lies in hopes their parrot media will rehabilitate him. I lost all respect for the man when he denounced his presentation to the UN as if Bush had forced him to do it. It's the same lies that Nancy Pelosi is now trying to push.
Neither has the character of a weasel. At least with the weasel you know what you are getting.
Answer away, it should be fun ...
The DNC parrot media is on it's last lung. This fight might be the one too far.
Oh shut up butt kissing legacy man.
the black first democrat powell
