Just breaking on Fox Major earthquake in Mexico City No link yet.
I would think the same thing, but I am frequently surprised by the (relatively) low numbers of deaths around Mexico City, when they have big shakers down there.
5.7 is a nothing earthquake.
They made a lot of improvements to their building codes after the big earthquake a few years ago. Theoretically, new construction should be a lot safer (assuming graft and corruption didn’t win out!). The city is built on an ancient lakebed, so the soil is extremely unstable.
Spain has already pledged two million dollars for emergency health services.
Guatamela has already pledged two million dollars for rebuilding.
California has already pledged two million replacement Mexicans.
In California it is a nothing earthquake thanks to modern building codes. In a place like Mexico it can be devastating.
Thanks. No link was available when I first posted, I did check the fox news site and there was not even a breaking banner yet.
The 85 Earthquake was an 8.1.
Only two..., just damn. ;-)
I guess 0bama will now be bailing out the Mexicants.”
Geee- I was wondering what NObama ws going to do to duck any participation in the Memorial Day celebrations around the country- this gives him an excuse.
Nobama managed to totally avoid the Medal of Honor Military Ball on the night of the inaguration. I don’t see him doing any wreath presentations, etc, on Monday.
From this map, it looks that way:
Nothing would please me more than to have Arizona with 700 miles of pristine, beach front property. My apologize to our California Freepers.
I was in Mexico city in 1958 after the 7+ one and the media makde a big thing about it but there wasn’t that much damage.
I wonder what the damage will be in the smaller cities closer to the epicenter? I can’t imagine building codes in rural Mexico are very stringent if they exist at all.
I hope and pray that is the case in this one as well.
MEXICO CITY A strong earthquake shook skyscrapers in Mexico City on Friday afternoon, sending frightened people into the streets.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake had a magnitude of 5.7 and was centered 90 miles (140 kilometers) southeast of the capital.
Radio Formula said there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.
Residents across the metropolis of 20 million gathered on sidewalks, afraid to go back into their homes and offices while police surveyed
That’s an awfully big assumption.
If he doesn’t thow down a wreath and at least try to look like he cares about the men and women who died so he can be where he is well, he oughtta just resign.
Looks like it working its way north....Is CA ready for "the big one"?
