WASHINGTON President Obama told human rights advocates at the White House on Wednesday that he was mulling the need for a preventive detention system that would establish a legal basis for the United States to incarcerate terrorism suspects who are deemed a threat to national security but cannot be tried, two participants in the private session said.
The discussion, in a 90-minute meeting in the Cabinet Room that included Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. and other top administration officials, came on the eve of a much-anticipated speech Mr. Obama is to give Thursday on a number of thorny national security matters, including his promise to close the detention center at the naval base in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba.
Human rights advocates are growing deeply uneasy with Mr. Obamas stance on these issues, especially his recent move to block the release of photographs showing abuse of detainees, and his announcement that he is willing to try terrorism suspects in military commissions a concept he criticized bitterly as a presidential candidate.

“The President has already been shredding the Constitution.”
REMEMBER, we have a “Constitutional Scholar” President that believes the Constitution is a FATALLY FLAWED document.
The sheeple that voted for this moron are going to get EVERYTHING that they voted.
Problem is, very few of them actually KNEW what they were voting for, because the American Media failed to do it’s job.
Agreed, I believe it started with taking away 2A rights from felons and "common sense" gun laws
So is it better to call them ‘Illegal Enemy Combatants’ so you can lock them up indefinitely like the Bush administration did with Padilla?
Don't believe in prison camps ____ ? Check my freeper page.
Is it just me, or is it that if they cannot be tried then they are not [validly] threats to national security?
I’ll go to “preventive detention”when I’m out of ammo and dead.
Let’s release Muslim terrorists and get ready to lock up pro lifers, pro gun people, and those would suggest we enforce our own immigration laws. That is what Obama’s proposal sounds like.Just as soon as he forms his Civilian Security Force(ever heard of the SA?)out of gang members and ex-cons.The anti-Obama vote in the Senate on Gitmo gives me hope that not all Dems are traitors,or that at least they are afraid of getting voted out of office.
Obama sounds more like a megalomaniac every day.I still think he’s a Soros shill, but he definitely seems to believe that HE rules America,Congress and the courts be damned(until he can fill the courts with left wing scum)-and he has the nerve to criticize Bush on wiretapping, etc. At least Bush never shut down protest-he let Cindy whatever her name camp out in Crawford unmolested,as was her right.
Obama in unguarded moments has a mean, arrogant, and condescending look and demeanor. He cannot tolerate disagreement with his pronouncements. This man is outside the box in a very bad way when it comes to executing his office. He constantly has his underlings send out test balloons like AWB to see how far he can go NOW.Believe me,he doesn’t plan giving up on the idea of a disarmed, pacified,America speaking in one voice.HIS.
The more you post that, the better.
You must have missed how Homeland is defining “terrorists” these days.
Wow. Just Wow!!!
Let’s see...you don’t do what 0 wants...we use strong arm tactics. You still don’t see the light or error of your ways we classify you as a terrorist. Real, economic, and imagined. It is no longer going to be just a smear campaign against private businesses or citizens...we are going to be detained!
Wasn’t it one of the trio in the House that called the folks at AIG, economic terrorists?
Weren’t many of us recently defined as terrorists or potential extremists?
And again where will this type of attitude from the White House take us in regards to Freedom of Speech?
The media did their job.
They got President Who elected.
DemoLiberals all suffer from DCVE..(Death Camp Victim Envy)
and they are bound and determined to create the societal zeitgeist, that will allow them to be built here in America.
They can’t be happy until they are being rounded up, beaten, tortured, mutilated, used as slaves and test animals till they are killed....How else can they be the best “good people” they can be? How can they be the most outrageously victimized “saints”, wiothout being the enslavers or the enslaved....And the DemoLiberals are working hammer and sickle 24/7/365 to pass ever new laws to enslave everyone with, little by little, they ensnare us all with their “good intentions” legislations.
“Any nation which practices this lesson will quickly run out of executioners and tyrants, or they will run out of it.”
Maybe I’m just thick this morning, but “it” what?
Elsewise, it’s three good lessons.
Uh, huh
After what he has done in the last four months you can post that with a straight face?
I think I'll err on the side of caution and wisdom
To the degree they continue to show mercy on others. Amen.
I have always felt that those captured on the battlefield should be interrogated in country of Iraq or Afghanistan. Interrogated by the government of that country and then tried by that country under their laws. They would break in days and then be tried in the local countries courts.
Congressman Billy Bob
Would you like to weigh in with your opinion of the law?
You are a respected voice of reason on this site.
The Supreme Court got it right the first time (in a Civil War case): The only justification for holding a person without trial is in a battlefield situation (when/where “the civil courts cannot operate”,) or when the individual legally satisfies the criteria for a prisoner of war.
If we’re talking about terrorist battlefield combatants, then I agree with Obama. If that battle-axe attorney general is involved in picking who is a terrorist suspect or not, then I couldn’t disagree with this plan more.
>In the state of NJ that is IMPOSSIBLE! Even if I buy a gun out of the state...any way around this?
Buy the gun out of state... take it into state in the car trunk, then keep it in an accessible yet inconspicuous place. You could “mount” it on a nice plaque and get a buck-head or two to go on either side of it. {IE hide it in plain sight.}
Or... he could just leave GITMO open. That system IS what he wants to create.
Sad, but he could have JUST LEFT IT THE WAY IT WAS!
What a damn fool.
