Spangdahlem Air Base in Germany would lose 18 F-16s and possibly one of its three fighter squadrons in a plan the Air Force announced Tuesday to eliminate about 250 fighter jets from its inventory.

I was stationed at Spangdahlem in the mid-80s (comm squadron) when they were still flying the F-4s. I sure miss that place.
The amount of real-estate a base has makes some of the decisions about what to fly. Some aircraft require longer runways, so perhaps Spangdahlem does not have a long enough runway for certain other planes that might otherwise be considered. I really don’t know, what they can operate there other than F-16s.
F-16s are not exactly new to the Air Force inventory. It also has to be considered that it is costly to keep airmen (and their families) in Europe when the known enemies have changes do much.
In the 80s, we were fighting the Cold War, and it made great sense to have Europe covered with US service members.
I am okay with them dwindling the size of the F-16s there as long as they can cover the loss with troops in another location. One negative about this is that the base is very close to the old Bitburg AB, which has been closed for a long time now. This would further weaken our presence in the region. The base is on the Western edge of Germany, in close proximity to France, Belgium and Luxembourg.
Typical USAF move (said as a retired USAF officer with 25 years). Maybe I’m bitter. I worked upgrades for fighters at the end of my career, and still feel our money would be better spent getting new F15Es & F-16s instead of sinking endless cash into a handful of F-35s.
