Over the weekend, President Obama named Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, a telegenic Republican moderate, as his pick for ambassador to China, removing one possible 2012 challenger from the fray. Gov. Mark Sanford of South Carolina, a straight-shooting right-winger I find it impossible to dislike, is loved by conservative activists, but not always by his fellow South Carolinians. Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska has, for a variety of reasons, not all of them entirely fair, become a national punchline. My guess is that Republican primary voters wont bite, just as Iowa Democrats turned against Howard Dean at the last possible moment. Gov. Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota is lacking in star wattage. Because Gov. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana is not insane, he's keeping his powder dry until 2016, and the same might even be true of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. As for Mike Huckabee, who has become a scourge of bailout capitalism, his failure to make headway outside of his evangelical base suggests that he's fundamentally a niche candidate.
The missing candidate, then, is Jeb Bush, a successful two-term governor of a big swing state with sterling conservative credentials, a record of appealing to Latino voters, and the raw brainpower and rhetorical skill to match Barack Obama.

“You can bet your last dollar that I will not vote for such a ticket.”
By then, that’s all I’ll have...my last dollar...and CHANGE...
Reihan Salam has written various Sanford love notes, so his comments re Gov. Palin no surprise.
Thank you for your comment Rev. Jackson.
He** no, I won’t go! Well, you get the idea. I will not vote for another Bush, Cheney I could vote for, Bush, NO.
Thanks. That’s better.
You might be entirely correct.
bush was awesome.
I would definitely take him again.
His critic have greatly encouraged our nations enemies.
No Thanks! Two were quite enough, a bit too much. Jeb may be the best of the three, but the Bush time is over.
Sorry, I don't vote for miserable failures, regardless of what letters follow their names.
Ah, the Party Firster speaks.
And your point is?
Why are Republicans continuing to define themselves relative to the Democrats?
LOL! Rinse. Repeat. It's an obsessive-compulsion disorder to keep voting the republican party line- whatever that is nowadays.
I feel the same way. That’s why I voted for bush twice and would gladly vote for him again.
It’s good we agree on something.
Hmmm. Is The Daily Beast trying to sow dissension among Republicans, to try to alienate conservative voters? I’d ignore anything from these folks.
When did I say that I would vote for Bush again?
Seriously? Like are you SERIOUS?
Jeb Bush was regarded by conservatives as a good Governor. You could say he’s the “Good Bush” but then you realize there’s no such thing, I’m not getting fooled by that family again. Besides his name is now mud for a large majority of the electorate (including conservatives).
Hey George P. Bush, Jeb’s son, he’s LATIN and DREAMY! Even dreamier than Myth Romney! We MUST run him for Congress to take the great Republican Royal House of Bush to the next generation!
And Cheney? GWBushes number 2 with the toilet level approval rating? And quasi-support for gay marriage?
Yes Jeb Bush and Dick Cheney are the future of the Republican party, in Obama’s dreams.
You can tell they are all still terrified by Sarah Palin -- all the sideswipes, the back-handed compliments, or direct insults -- she is the one the Democrats and RINOs fear the most.
It's that anti-corruption thing. The cockroaches fear the light.
Exactly.
My first CIC was JFK and my last CIC was GWB. The only reason I did not vote for GWB in 2004 was because my absentee ballot did not get to me in Iraq. I would have gladly voted for him again if that was possible. Thank God I did not have to call zero my CIC because I retired in December of 2005. Zero is not even my president!!
God no!
