HARARE, Zimbabwe, May 19 (UPI) -- Appalling conditions in Zimbabwe's Chikurubi prison have resulted in at least 700 of its 1,300 inmates dying in the last year, local media reported.
The Zimbabwe weekly The Standard said the maximum security prison, located about 12 miles east of Harare, has one of the highest deaths rates in the world, ranking it among the worst jails in human history, The Daily Telegraph reported Tuesday.
Six inmates were found dead in their filthy cells on Monday, with a similar number dying last weekend, the Standard reported. About 100 rat-mutilated bodies were stacked up in the prison mortuary waiting to be claimed or buried in pauper's graves within the prison walls.
The weekly reported the collapse of the Zimbabwean economy has resulted in medical care and food being cut off for Chikurubi inmates, leaving them exposed to diseases and starvation.
The International Red Cross has been allowed by Zimbabwe's new coalition government to help with conditions at the prison, but 327 deaths were recorded at Chikurubi between November and January, the Telegraph said.

That’s surprising.
African prisons are usually pretty luxuriant.

Totally agree. Every celebrity I can recall keeps telling me how great Africa happens to be. According to them, there is no other place on Earth that they would rather be.

Any waterboarding involved? I propose we send Nancy Pelosi on a (one-way) fact-finding tour.

Gee, maybe all the Congresscritters who are always lecturing us about adopting the policies of (fill-in-the-blank-nation) will insist that we have to get our prison death rate up to 50% to show that we are in solidarity with the Zimbabweans.

How sad. I hate reading these kind of stories, because there never seems to be anything one can do to improve the situation. These places are just lost in their own corruption.

That’s over! They’ve been restrained by the Spanish government, by an overwhelming vote!

That’s where I’d go looking for “harsh interrogation techniques”.

This is the sort of social justice that Obama and company want for the United States. It must somehow be the fault of the US and we need to compensate for all the evil in the world and the US must be brought down to the lowest denominator. Obama must stay up at night admiring the way Mugabe has destroyed his country, once the breadbasket of Africa.
