Hard quake shakes
Have you ever seen this? I might download it tomorrow:
http://www.usgs.gov/newsroom/article.asp?ID=2069
New 3-D animations of the magnitude 7.8 earthquake scenario are now available to the public at http://earthquake.usgs.gov/regional/nca/simulations/shakeout/ .
Fourteen animations can be downloaded from the site in high definition format. The 3-D animations show, from the perspective of a several different Southern California locations, how intensely the ground would shake and shift during a very strong 7.8 earthquake with an epicenter on the southern end of the San Andreas Fault.
(snip)
I can remember when the Northridge quake happened, I couldn’t get a hold of a friend of mine for a full day cause the cellphone lines were screwed up. His brother, who lived in Minneapolis at the time kept trying his home while I kept trying his cell. Of course everyone was fine, it’s was just to make sure.......
A few years later the brother moved out to LA till around 3 years ago when they moved to Dallas. I doubt they felt anything Saturday.....
Cowgirl, which was the sizable quake in the mid- to late 70s? I was in Huntington Beach at the time and had a window crack, but I don’t remember where it was centered.
Thanks in advance.
Here’s a pretty good discussion of California’s Earthquake Insurance Authority.
yep. It is funny how those numbers are nail filers. Ho Hum. Wake me up when a real earthquake happens.
A weather freak too?
That makes 2 of us!!!
Guess it’d help if I actually put the link up...

Sylmar was in 1971 — it was huge. I don’t remember another big one in the 1970s.
This isn’t Turkey or the badlands of China where their idea of structural integrity is 10 story apartment buildings made of mud brinks with chicken wire for reinforcement. A 7.4 would not be good, but the death toll would be nothing like you’d get in other countries where building codes are basically non-existent.
That may have been it. I was young at the time so my memory of it is a bit fuzzy. Now my memory is much more ... wait, what was I ... ? Damn! I lost my train of thought again. :)
Sounds like someone's just a tad bit spoiled. ;-). I say this as a woman who spoils her pets rotten. LOL.
They know more than us humans about this stuff. Glad everyone is safe at your home. :-).
Looks interesting...haven’t seen it before.
California trivia: The earliest reported earthquake in California was felt in 1769 by the exploring expedition of Gaspar de Portola while the group was camping about 48 kilometers (30 miles) southeast of Los Angeles.
Just turned 43 last a couple weeks ago. I’ve seen the name Portola on some streets and landmarks and such. Maybe it’s the same guy?
Yup Spike is spoiled rotten.
That’s how he got the name Gaspar.
Probably one and the same. I remember him from the old public school California History classes.
Now they teach about Harvey Milk and Harry Hay, instead. :-(
LOL!
We were far away at a rock concert — on the balcony in a rock venue — so did not feel anything. But when I got out, I saw I had a text from home: it was MAJOR. Not too much fell, but it was a very shaky scary quake in Long Beach. Kinda glad I missed it. No actual damage.
What’s really odd is that they’ve forgotten about Moscone. All that talk about Harvey Milk Day, the least they could do is call it “Harvey Milk and That Other Guy” day.
