Hard quake shakes
Dogs and cats and other critters will do that, Grams. It’s something I’ve seen before. My dogs were running areound scratching and digging a couple days before Kilauea went off. Didn’t think much of it but that was in 1983.
No wait. Stay. Oh hell, how do I know? I live in Michigan. We run out into the streets when there's a tornado warning.
Everybody out there OK?
I will always recall the only earthquake I ever felt, it happened in 1986 here!! I was going to college at the time and was on the 4th floor of a building and it shook pretty well. The second I got home I brought the flashlight out, went in the basement to make sure everything was OK...
Well, yes.....
;)
What can I say.....
Worthless animals!!!!!
LOL !!!!!!
California policies were revised after the Northridge quake. Most, if not all, coverage comes through a state pool with no recourse if the pool runs out. Essentially, to be assured of a payoff, you need to be in a strong earthquake that doesn’t do much damage to others. The encouraging aspect is that now that the state’s in the earthquake insurance business, it doesn’t cost a lot.
I was a couple of miles from the Northridge quake, uninsured, but got lucky. A friend a few blocks away had what was at first thought to be minor chimney damage and ultimately required half her house to be rebuilt. Her insurers covered almost every penny, at great cost, which is probably why they’re out of the earthquake insurance business now.
In a tornado warning to go to the basement....or a closet under the stairs...
Yes, I know that. I’m saying that we in Michigan, who rarely see tornadoes, run out into the streets to actually SEE it before believing the warning. We’re that curious. And dumb.
Run out in the street when there’s a tornado warning??
You bet!! Same in Ohio too.....
Looks like you nailed it! Newport/Inglewood fault. The gal from caltech showed the map on KCAL and N-I is at the very north end of that fault.

Tectonic Summary
A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck about 3 miles east of Los Angeles International airport at 8:45 p.m. (PDT) local time, at a depth of 8.5 miles. Given that the location is in a densely populated part of the Los Angeles basin, it was widely felt. Initial estimates from the USGS ShakeMap indicate that although strong shaking will have been felt by many people, damage is expected to be light.
The initial focal mechanism is consistent with slip on the Newport-Inglewood fault, which was the source of the damaging 1933 Long Beach earthquake. Two of the early aftershocks, however, are west of the Newport-Inglewood fault trend. Later aftershocks will help to define the fault plane that ruptured. The Los Angeles basin is crossed from northwest to southeast by the Newport-Inglewood fault, which was formerly thought to be capable of very large earthquakes. More recent research has shown that, instead, it is of less concern and only capable of up to about M 7.4.
Gotta be a midwest thing. When we had them in Texas, there was no curiosity- just a mad dash to the interior rooms.
Caltech has reduced this to a mere 4.7...and since the richter is a log scale...a 7.4 would be something over 10 squared stronger....
Didja ever want to be a chaser???
I did. Do.
;)
7.4? 7.4 is ENORMOUS. A 7.4 on the Newport-Inglewood would kill thousands and be the worst natural disaster in the history of the United States.
Where is that Tectonic Summary from?
I lived in LA for five years and lived through Northridge ‘94, so I know what a real earthquake is like. I don’t even feel anything less than a 5...
Hell yes! How fun would that be?? I’m a weather freak.
A 7.4 would release something in the neighborhood of 20,000 times more energy than a 4.7 (Energy release goes up about 30 times with each magnitude, and is a better indication of damaging power.)
A quake that shallow is not a good sign. I’d expect a bigger one in the next few days.
You lived through a moderately large earthquake that directed most of its energy into unpopulated hills.
Dozens of LA area faults are capable of earthquakes that would make Northridge look like a joke.
