From the article: "Strong sales of Spam, Dinty Moore stew and chili helped Hormel Foods Corp. post a 6 percent increase in first quarter sales in its grocery products unit."

These products are not cheep. Could sales be up because they store well? That would be right next to the ammo!

For some reason Spam has been a long time staple of diet in Hawaii. I'm a leading edge baby boomer so I'm familiar with Spam, as a youngster we had Spam fairly frequently. Dinty Moore's too. Haven't reverted to either yet ... but a fried Spam sandwich sounds good to me. It's lunch time in my time zone, probably why.

I've bought addition supplies of everything and put them into 'storage'.

"But economic woes are as rough on the tummy as they are on the wallet. Chicago-based market researcher Information Resources Inc. reports that sales of laxative liquids and powders rose 11.5 percent for the 52 weeks ending April 19. Sales of stomach remedy tablets, including Pepto-Bismol and Phillips brands, climbed 8 percent."

Even, over the counter medicines.

I intend to use coffee, chocolate and sugar as first line food barter items. For the last few months, I've been 'hoarding' (ahem) six rolls of nickels a week...nickels will be good for either inflation or deflation and easier to spend that a trillion dollar US bill.

The Nickel Is Worth 5 Cents Again!

"... around this time last year (2007), a nickel was worth almost a dime! I'm talking about the melt value of the U.S. nickel coin, which is actually made out of 75% copper (and 25% nickel.)

BTW, my neighbors are all 'stocked-up' too.

During the 2nd half of WWII, The Russian Army survived on Spam.

Many US merchant seamen gave their lives making the food (Spam) supply runs into the ice-free port of Murmansk and were easy 'pickings' for German submarines.

Even today, the Russians have many recipes that include Spam...I think they may even have a 'Spam' day celebration.

Spam and Dinty Moore vegetable beef soup is exactly what I have stored in my survival closet. Protein that stores well.

Coffee is a major barter item, I buy the five gallon tubs of it. Also, tobacco. Loose tobacco so easier to dib out, but they are good bartering items. And of course gallons of vodka.

Laxative sales rising? Sounds like somebody’s tucked into their MRE stockpile, lol.

I have everything necessary to make 'moonshine.'

I remember when I was in high school and worked at a local (rural) grocery store...the law would allow us to sell only so much sugar to one person. Moonshiners use lots of sugar.

What kind of coffee can you get in five gallon tubs and where?

...nothing wrong with Spam...we always have some on hand...I especially like it fried with eggs for breakfast.

Stonewalls, who developed a taste for Spam during WWII while his Dad was fighting Japs.

Well, I meant it as a joke, and it is pretty funny to anyone familiar with the ... umm, shall we say, digestive characteristics of the MRE.

It just dawned on me that it might actually be related, but anticipatory, though.

SPAM has a phenomenal shelf life, far beyond just about any retail canned food I can think of, a decade at least. It’s being spun as an artifact of recession, of economizing. That’s nonsense, SPAM has gotten fairly expensive, for what it is.

I enjoyed a Spam sandwich, just before reading this article. There I go, being a leading indicator again. :)

When Democrats are in power, recessions are cool. We can all eat spam.

Well at least there’s no shortage of chocolate. Ammo, that’s another story. I’d say guns and ammo are the hottest items out there, judging by price and availability. It has little to to with recession, and most to do with the dem controlled gov’t.
