Thoughtful voice all but lost in Obama-Notre Dame drama
Chicago Tribune ^ | May 15, 2009 | John Kass

Posted on 05/16/2009 4:59:45 AM PDT by don-o

President Barack Obama arrives at Notre Dame on Sunday already triumphant, the champion of the pro-abortion rights lobby ready to be honored by America's pre-eminent Roman Catholic university. This controversy has been spun as Catholics opposing a president offering a commencement address at Notre Dame.

That's not really the issue. What most are angry about is that a great Catholic university is conferring an honorary degree upon a politician whose position on abortion is in absolute conflict with Catholic teaching. Given how this has been spun, by an adoring pro-Obama (and pro-abortion rights) media, the weekend's news coverage is tiresomely predictable:

snip

What's also evident is that with buzzwords like "diversity" and "nuance" flying around, the one person who has spoken most clearly in all of this has become a footnote: Mary Ann Glendon, a law professor at Harvard University and a former U.S. ambassador to the Vatican. Perhaps Glendon has become a media footnote because what she said wasn't nuanced enough for the scribes. Yet rather than dance nimbly, the 70-year-old Glendon did something the best Catholic teachers do. She stood firm. And she engaged in absolute clarity. Glendon was to have received the Laetare Medal, described by Notre Dame as the most prestigious honor awarded to American Catholics. But in a completely non-nuanced open letter to Notre Dame President Rev. John Jenkins, Glendon turned it down.

Glendon's letter was largely ignored in the media, particularly the Chicago media, which exhausted itself by mocking and ridiculing Cardinal Francis George for daring to stand up for his faith.

George suggested that it was "an extreme embarrassment" for a Catholic university to confer honors upon a pro-abortion-rights president. For this grievous sin against Obama, mayoral brother Billy Daley attacked the cardinal in a Tribune op-ed piece, calling the cardinal's stance "an embarrassment to Chicago Catholics."

And so, during Lent, we were treated to a Daley instructing the cardinal about what belongs to Caesar.

All that loud political anger was aimed at a priest who stood for his faith, as he prepared for Easter. Though I'm not Roman Catholic, I was hurt and personally sickened by the attacks against Cardinal George.

Glendon did not shout or mock or ridicule. Instead, she wrote a letter and turned down an honor.

By doing so, she offered a teachable moment about what remains rock solid in a faith that has lasted for 2,000 years.

Wow... this guy gets it more than some Catholics do. And fromt the Chicago Tribune.

Seriously? A woman who's not into killing babies embarasses Obama by standing solidly on her beliefs. He' flutters here and there posing like some idol. That is not a story the MSM wants to cover. Ever.

Sorry, the guy won’t impress me until he stops writing “pro-abortion-rights.” If you can’t call a Death Eater by name (potential copyright violations?) at least name them “pro-abortion,” because they are.

It isn’t just that he disagrees with Catholicism, or traditional Christianity of any form for that matter. He views this disagreement as clear proof that he is intellectually superior to those who disagree with him. Indeed, he, and many other Leftists, view themselves as a higher form of human.

Those who served in Vietnam found themselves labeled by the far left kooks as “baby killers”. I find that today, that applies to “pro-choice” people. They are baby killers in the most absolute of terms. No nuance, no BS - that’s what they are.

Good point!

Another story coming across the AP wire from The Nation:

Glendon's Final Insult

The article savages Glendon for using politics in withdrawing from Notre Dame. Can these people get anymore surreal?

From Glendon’s letter to ND.

“A commencement, however, is supposed to be a joyous day for the graduates and their families. It is not the right place, nor is a brief acceptance speech the right vehicle, for engagement with the very serious problems raised by Notre Dame’s decision—in disregard of the settled position of the U.S. bishops—to honor a prominent and uncompromising opponent of the Church’s position on issues involving fundamental principles of justice.”

0bama’s not just into killing babies anymore. Killing justice and faith in one fell swoop. This is an attempted coup. After all, we are ‘not’ a Christian nation, right? You’d think he was striking at the heart of America.

I’m watching to see how the Catholic church deals with Fr. Jenkins. He initiated this event. He also serves on the board of an organization that provides abortion. So, no conflict there, as far as Fr. Jenkins is concerned. But, there is a major conflict with his purported Catholicism.

Whats ironic about that is the far left kooks that called VVets baby killers then are the same lot (far left kooks) that believe in killing babies now.

President Barack Obama arrives at Notre Dame on Sunday already triumphant, the champion of the pro-abortion rights lobby ready to be honored by America's pre-eminent Roman Catholic university.

The administrators and decision-makers at Notre Dame invited the world's top representative of the Culture of Death to bring honor and glory to themselves, not to God, not to Notre Dame. They are getting what they want.

For if God did not spare the natural branches, (perhaps) he will not spare you either.

See, then, the kindness and severity of God: severity toward those who fell, but God's kindness to you, provided you remain in his kindness; otherwise you too will be cut off. Rom 11:21-22

Wow.....I obama knows that this woman refused to stand on the stage with him...I don’t blame her for turning down such a prestigious award....it means NOTHING if given by a University that is gonig against its OWN STANDARDS!
