A federal judge has issued a pair of temporary restraining orders to halt what officials describe as a wave of "robo-calls" warning people their auto warranties are expiring and offering new service plans.
U.S. District Judge John F. Grady issued a temporary restraining order against Transcontinental Warranty Inc. on Thursday and one against Voice Touch Inc. on Friday.
The Federal Trade Commission filed suit against the companies in U.S. District Court in Chicago on Thursday. Chairman Jon Leibowitz says the FTC "has disconnected the people responsible for so many of these annoying calls."
Officials say Americans have gotten as many as 1 billion of the random prerecorded phone calls. Grady's orders also freeze the companies' assets.

I'm glad to see someone taking action.
why did it take so long to shut them down.
I get at least 3 of these each week. Remind me why I signed up for the Do Not Call registry?
Thank you Jesus. :-)
I can’t count the calls from them, either, but there’s never been a person there for me to threaten.
Are you drunk dialing again, Bender?
I hate these rotten sobs, calls at home.... at work... on cell phone. May their computer dialer rot in hell!
Indeed. All of our lines are on the “do not call” registry, and I must get 4-5 of these a week.
I’ve never had a car warrantee in my life. But I was getting these dam calls. On my cell phone no less.
SO Good to hear! I laughed when I got the first call, all of our cars are over 20 years old! Should I be surprised that my warranty is OVER?
I wasn’t laughing after the second, third, fourth and on .. calls that I got.
Mr. mm got one of them on the phone once and asked which vehicle it was that had the warranty about to expire and they asked him to tell them the make and model.
He then said that since they called him to tell him that the warranty was about to expire that they should have that information so they should be able to tell him which vehicle it was. They hung up.
When I would get them on line to tell them not to call any more, they hung up faster than I could believe. I finally did get my two cents in before they could answer back and that is what put an end to it for us.
I've gotten several of them and the latest one, three days ago, I followed the prompts and got a female. In answer to each of her questions I demanded they remove my number from their call list. The last time I stated my request she said "NO" and hung up.
I have already reported them to the FCC and for whatever reason they can't do anything about it as detailed in a written response to my complaint.
Gosh, I thought the government was supposed to be the answer to all our junk phone calls by implementing the "Do Not Call" list..........LOL!
Similar calls assure me that my (nonexistent) credit card bill can be resolved and that I can get my (nonexistent) mortgage back on track. They will NOT give you any information about who they are.
Hopefully the ‘robo-calls’ from the politicians will also get stopped.
I’ve been getting their calls too.. and on my cell phone (!)
and they keep calling me even though I still have almost three years left on the factory warranty...
Same here, the people at this company should have their names and addresses put up in public. I get at least five or ten a week, possibly more. Can you imagine if an elderly person with mild senility gets this type of phone call. They would probably sign up for the warranty.
The first time I got a call from these people,
I was on the freeway and they somehow got my
cell phone number.
The other company that is just as annoying is
credit services. I pretend I’m interested in
rolling over my non existent balance when I talk
to them, and I’ll put them on hold, however,
sometimes I’ll get a rude employee who hangs
up on me before I can say “hold on, please”.
