ARCADIA, Mo. A 3-year-old boy was found in remarkably good condition Wednesday, 50 hours after he wandered away from his home and became lost in the rugged hills of Missouri's Mark Twain National Forest.
Joshua Childers slipped out of his family's mobile home near Arcadia in rural southeast Missouri around 11:30 a.m. Monday.

Two full days and nights of searching proved increasingly frustrating until around 4 p.m. Wednesday, when search volunteer Donnie Halpin, walking along an all-terrain vehicle trail about three miles from the boy’s home, spied a couple of stray dogs sniffing at something.
Halpin, 57, told The Associated Press he looked on the ground of a hollow near a creek bottom and saw the boy lying there, facing the other way. Unsure of the boy was alive, Halpin said, “Hey, Bud.”
“He jumped right up and grinned at me,” Halpin said. “I said, ‘You ready to go home?’ He said, ‘Yeah.”’
(big smile)
Oh yay! I’m so happy for them!
Praise God!
“Dang it’s good to hear some good news for once .... “
BUMP!
My son, who is a healthy adult now, used to find “trails.” He would put his head down and follow said trail, no matter where it led. That was a long childhood.
My Brother-in-law had a 5-year-old son. Very rambunctious. The kid disappearred. There was a lot of concern. Hours later the child was found, unharmed (thank God) one town over. The 5-year-old was on his bike, running away from home. He had covered a significant amount of ground, and had no idea where he was, but he had enough sense to stop a cop and ask for directions.
So, anyway, the kid is now 11 years old. My Brother-in-law is teaching him how to drive a car -- with the expectation (of course!) that the kid will sit on this knowledge for the next 5 years without ever trying to put it into practice.
Uh-huh.
“As a parent of a 3 year old I find this story especially heart warming. My son is one who tends to run off if given any opportunity.”
As the mother of an escape/artist 2 yr. old, my first reaction to reading this story was “there by the grace of God go I!”
Yes. Good news.
We had thingies on the door knobs and rigged up the doors to chime when opened, or we would have lost our daughter for sure when she was three.
Big Smile.....What a joy. So wonderful to hear. Years ago my 2 year old got out....found him pretty fast but boy was I freaked out.
Little stinker....
“...spied a couple of stray dogs sniffing at something.”
So what happened to these little stray dogs? I am more worried them now. These little guys were the real heroes and no one else.
“That was a long childhood.”
I hear ya on that...
Thanks for the heart warming story!

wonder what breed of dogs...
no kidding, ours made it next door a few months ago...about 40 yards
slipped out the door in a home full of other loud kids and headed out to see their black lab
the neighbor called and we did not even know he had slipped out
embarassed of course but so grateful
in a loud large family this sorta thing can easily hapen with adventuresome little boys in particular
OTOH, I am wondering WHY Bloodhounds couldn't track the little boy? OR if they were even used?
