Baldacci Signs Same-Sex Marriage Into Law
Portland Press Herald ^ | 5/6/09 | Matt Wickenheiser

Posted on 05/06/2009 10:04:05 AM PDT by steve-b

Democratic Gov. John Baldacci today signed into law a bill allowing gay marriage, making Maine the fifth state to allow same-sex marriage.

The governor's signature came barely an hour after the measure won final approval in the state Legislature, with a final 31-8 vote in favor in the Maine Senate.

Baldacci said in a statement that while he has opposed gay marriage in the past, "I have come to believe that this is a question of fairness and ofequal protection under the law, and that a civil union is not equal to civil marriage.

"This new law does not force any religion to recognize a marriage that falls outside of its beliefs," the governor said. "It does not require the church to perform any ceremony with which it disagrees. Instead, it reaffirms the separation of church and state.

"It guarantees that Maine citizens will be treated equally under Maine’s civil marriage laws, and that is the responsibility of government," Baldacci said....

"Maine has a People's Veto process - no law takes effect until 90 days following the Governor's signature. If a certain amount of signatures are presented to the Sec. of State prior to the end of that 90 day period, then the implementation of the law is stopped until a November ballot vote - we get a chance to turn the law down, whatever the morons in Augusta say."

Unbelievable.
I've never heard of such a thing.
Sounds great, would prevent what happens routinely here in WI, all the time.

Across the Republic I've noticed a few modus operandi are applied for successfully subverting the will of the people, again and again:

1) First off usually an important issue's never presented to the people to VOTE on in the first place!

2) When it is present for a vote, said vote result(s) are overruled as "unconstitutional" by you know who.

3) Here in WI there's yet a different twist.
The people vote against/for something, think it's settled.
WRONG.
The very next year --or so-- down the line, and always under a different (guess which) party majority the issue's brought up again. Of course this time it passes/fails the way the different party wants it go, and to hell with the majority who voted on the issue to start.

I don't *think* the founders meant it to happen this way.
But, what do I know.

Good luck my friend, I'll be watching y'all. ;^)

How long will it be before the first attempts to have three person marriages, marriages between people and domesticated animals, and marriages between people and barnyard animals.

Hell, there was a horse sodomy case in Washington state where they wouldn’t prosecute the offender for animal abuse because they couldn’t prove the horse didn’t enjoy it.

The left (the devil) is an unrelenting force. It will never stop until it is crushed.

I drove up to CT last weekend with my family and when we finally get to waterford CT I asked my wife if she wanted to go to MA to see her mother and she said she would love to but being up here breaks her heart and it was not the place she grew up in.

The only way now this can be repealed is the people need to get those signatures as we did here(actually got a load of signatures between my wife and I ) and get the vote on the ballot.

Is this happening in ME,MA,CT,VT,RI,NY,NJ,?

I know there is a good organised group in MA even though it was forced on them first there.
This is the only way now to stop this insanity otherwise the whole area will be lost for us and our children after.

I am head how some have said that the legislature did this and that is what the people wanted’

well no it isn’t how many legislatures ran ion the platform of wanting homosexual marriage, none, How many knew their legislature would do this after the election?, Certainly hardly any.

This was done after the election and the homos waited and waited knowing that they had their people in the legislature in place but never wanting the publicly to know what they were doing . This is exactly what they did in MA and are now using that tactic in the other states.

For years they gradually got their people into the legislature and supported them financially while never stating that they were getting homo friendly legislatures in place

you fight back people this is your state and do not let them win, get this on a ballot

I agree with your religious views but gay “marriage” should not be seen only from a religious point...
In order to reach more people the claim for “equal rights” should be dismissed with philosophical rational arguments about human nature...
“EQUALITY” is a lame claim often used in order to get privilèges out of touch with reallity!
There is no “equality” between the TRUE MARRIAGE/FAMILY and the so-called “gay-marriage”.

I just have my beliefs, based on scripture.

The Biblical question that popped up in my mind is ...

What religion was involved in the marriage feast at Cana?

You make sound points but I cannot divorce myself from my core beliefs. Humanism is ruining this world.

Any word yet on the sex of Baldacci? I’ve got a 500-watt bulb and there’s a guy around here who’s damn good at sorting the hen-rooster problem.

....homosexual politicians like Barney Frank ....

NO! Next thing you know you'll be telling me Liberace and Rock Hudson were gay! No wonder the poor bastard had to leave Bayonne, NJ.

Everybody in Bayonne gets a nickname, like Heavyweight contender, Chuck Wepner, "The Bayonne Bleeder." I reckon Barney would have been "The Bayonne Bugger." or more poetically perhaps (he is a Hahvid "man," you know):

Barney, The Bugger of Bayonne."

Well said.

Homo marriage also violates Natural Law.

There is also nothing in the history of western civilization to support it.

As demonstrated by the 4th century Romans, high Islamic, and 1930s British societies, rampant homosexuality among ruling elites is an indication of civilization in decline.
