Senate Democrats Deny Specter Committee Seniority
WashPost ^ | 5/5/09 | Paul Kane

The Senate dealt a blow tonight to Sen. Arlen Specter's hold on seniority in several key committees, a week after the Pennsylvanian's party switch placed Democrats on the precipice of a 60-seat majority.

In a unanimous voice vote, the Senate approved a resolution that added Specter to the Democratic side of the dais on the five committees on which he serves, an expected move that gives Democrats larger margins on key panels such as Judiciary and Appropriations.

So true. When it comes to the game of dirty politics, Democrats will always out-do Republicans. The sooner Republicans realize this, the better off we all will be. Republicans have been governing on their terms - not ours.

When good compromises with evil, it is only evil that can profit.

If he is weakened it will make for a bruising primary fight and be very good for Toomey (unless he has his own primary fight, but I've heard they cleared the decks for him - anyone in PA know more on this?)

As soon as Specter voted for the stimulus bill, the state GOP cut a deal with Toomey in which he would drop his bid for governor and take on Specter.

However, after Specter switched parties last week, the National GOP/Senate Republican Election Committee tried and is trying to shove Toomey out of the picture in favor of good ol' boy Tom Ridge. It's shaping up to be a nasty National vs. State GOP fight over who will run on the GOP ticket.

Maybe he can form his own party. The self centered party.

Actually, can Democrats ever be embarrassed?

One needs a conscience to be embarrassed. We need CWOC's (Conservatives without Conscience).

Can you imagine a perverted ego so large it makes a person totally blind to reality. I’m sure the dems stroked him into believing the would love and cherish him if he switched. Personally, I think the the man has delusional disorder.

Time to start bombarding the RNC and Steele with pledges not to send another dime in donations if Ridge and the GOP are going to muscle Toomey out of the picture (even if you never send them a dime, anyhow, LOL).

However, I'm serious on this. We have to pre-empt, for a change. The RNC has to get the message, and quick!

>> Specter’s a very arrogant guy <<

Not only that:

Whenever the Washingtonian magazine does one of its polls among Capitol Hill staffers, Specter often wins the title of "meanest Senator."

(Except that he has sometimes come in second, behind Barbara Midgetkulski or Ted Stevens.)

Good ol’ Benedict Arlen - he’ll find that traitors and turncoats get no more respect on the other side than on the side they betrayed!

I have always been against term limits ... BUT now I am beginning to rethink my position

Well, Arlen is now demonstrating the correct alternative to term limits - the end of the Congressional seniority system. Consider: If Mass wants to return The Swimmer to the Senate every 6 years, that is their right and it's slippery-slope to interfere. BUT ... Teddy is no better than the most junior Senator if you consider the Equal Protection clause to be paramount. Yes, the Constitution lets the Senate set its own rules but can those rules undermine the protections under the Constitution? I say NO! Eliminate Seniority and Arlen and the rest are reduced to being sad sack back benchers - that is the demonstration he's providing for us right now. Without their absolute power, berks like Specter and Murtha would be nothing to the electorate.

GOOD!
He gets what he deserves. I hope that he has to fight in a primary too. This is what he gets for getting in bed with the likes of Obama and the rest of the DNC.
As if he didn’t know that they were liars?

What did he think, that there was actually honor amongst thieves?

I've heard they cleared the decks for him [Toomey] - anyone in PA know more on this?

The Republicrat party is stewing around trying to find a RINO who will run against Toomey in the primary because he MUST be taken out. The-one-party-with-two-names in PA will do ANYTHING to get rid of anyone even slightly conservative, and the phony Republicans are worse than the Democrats IMO in this regard. Tom Ridge is the name they are floating to take Toomey out currently, but you can bet, they'll come up with somebody and tons of $ to make certain Toomey doesn't win.
