McDermott [D, WA] wants your kids in mandatory public service

Our Congress with the help of Republicans is squeezing out private charity with paid "volunteers." They are paid - AmericaCorps - but called volunteers; it sound so good. What do they work on? What the politicians want; you have no say. And they tripled its funding.

But what if there aren't enough volunteers for paid "volunteer" service. Force! It might be unconstitutional under the 13th Amendment's ban on involuntary servitude. But Jim McDermott (D, Washington) wants your children to serve his favorite causes.

Robert Knight at Townhall

... Mandatory national service has reemerged in HR 1442, the "Congressional Commission on Civil Service Act," sponsored by Washington Rep. Jim McDermott (D). [They link to HR 1444, not 1442.]

This free-standing bill, which directs the proposed commission to "enhance our Nation and the global community," reaches to kid-level, providing "the means to develop awareness of national service and volunteer opportunities at a young age by creating, expanding and promoting service options for primary and secondary school students."

If you think this will be limited to public schools, you don't know the mindset driving this bus.

And if you're a sacrificial parent homeschooling or sending your children to a religious school so that they won't be engulfed by the public school MTV culture that has led 11-year-olds to "sextext" nude pictures to each other, you'll be out of luck. Your kid will need to go with the flow.

The McDermott bill requires the commission to study "[w]hether a workable, fair, and reasonable mandatory service requirement for all able young people could be developed to ... overcome civic challenges by bringing together people from diverse economic, ethnic, and educational backgrounds." Or, as riot icon Rodney King might say, "Can't we all be forced to get along?"

Of the face of it, mandatory civilian service violates the 13th Amendment's prohibition on involuntary servitude. During a national crisis, such as World War II, married men with children were given the choice: military service or work in a defense plant.  The Constitution's Article 1, Section 8 allows Congress to "raise and support armies" and to "provide and maintain a navy." It's one thing to allow for conscientious objection to a military draft; it's another to draft civilians to serve in politicians' pet projects absent an emergency.

The McDermott bill also charges the commission with examining "the need" for a federal, four-year college to train "future public sector leaders."

Think of it, an entire university churning out graduates with the same mentality as ACORN, which is to say they will view the nation as entirely secular and public, except the parts that are stubbornly and temporarily private.

H.R. 1444 Look for "required" and "mandatory:"

... (5) The effect on the Nation, on those who serve, and on the families of those who serve, if all individuals in the United States were expected to perform national service or were required to perform a certain amount of national service.

(6) Whether a workable, fair, and reasonable mandatory service requirement for all able young people could be developed, and how such a requirement could be implemented in a manner that would strengthen the social fabric of the Nation and overcome civic challenges by bringing together people from diverse economic, ethnic, and educational backgrounds.

8 year old? Obama wants them Zero to adult for indoctrination. In Communism you cannot have babies attaching themselves to their parents values. Family life is a no no under commmunist rule.

My niece went to Thailand with her church group. The amazing thing was how many ran to be baptized she said. She said they craved the word of the Lord. I find that astounding. But it was a extremely hard time until she got home.

Another friend has gone to Delhi twice and came home both times sicker than ever and hospitalized. obama cannot tell me people do not volunteer regardless of obstacles.

There are some tough places in Thailand and a lot of nice ones. I always enjoyed the experience. Married a Thai gal over 30 years ago and she hasn’t kicked me out yet. They can be very patient. :)

I know, but I learned from home schooling my four grown kids what it takes to play the game. My wife has a couple of Masters degrees in education and her certifications. I have my worthless Masters in Public Affairs, but it qualifies me to be an administrator of a private school, and my oldest son has a degree in education and his certification. The state will play hell beating me on this one. My household is a private school. If they want a school building, I’ll put one up. The property is already paid for. If we have to teach other kids, we have a waiting list of parents who want us to do it. The state would do well to leave us alone.

I never thought of this as being a attack on home schooling. That seems to have his own progressive agenda but it was ruled parents had the right to homeschool.

I think this is more of obama wanting everyone to see things his way and starting young is the only way to do that. I imagine in my mind Rahm and Obama having a system where babies lay in cribs 20 hours a day or more. Frightened and alone. Up to the age of 3 this is when babies get their idea of what the world is like. Full of love or hate. They would grow up in hate and anger like obama did and would cling to communist ideology as little robots.

Besides obama needs both parents work furiously to pay taxes. Like that idiot reporter said, americans do not want to not pay taxes, they are looking for jobs to pay taxes.

obama will never touch any of my children or grandchildren. I will not even see obama in public speech or on TV and you can bet he will never get my children.

The mandatory service act is simply scary. Watching Rahm laugh as he he talks about their plan is satan poking us with a stick into the fire.

There are a lot of young people who belong to Amish communities. Will they be required to participate in this program?
